MYRTLE BEACH | Mrs. Barbara Ann “Peg” Hughes D’Angelo, age 77, of the Dunes Section of Myrtle Beach passed away Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at her residence following an illness. Mrs. D’Angelo was born July 3, 1930 in Wilmington, Delaware, a daughter of the late Robert Hughes and the late Eva Mae Hastings Hughes. Following the death of her mother at an early age, she was reared mainly in the Mount Leon Community of Longs by her very special aunt, Miss Lee Hughes, whom she adored and thought of her as a mother. Mrs. D’Angelo moved from South Carolina to Pennsylvania and spent many years there raising her two sons. She invested in many business ventures and became a successful businesswoman and entrepreneur. Upon her retirement, Mrs. D’Angelo returned to the Myrtle Beach area and married James “Jimmy” D’Angelo, Sr. in the fall of 1985. They were truly a match made in heaven and spent many wonderful years together until he passed away in 2000. Mrs. D’Angelo loved to play golf, entertain family and friends, and enjoyed going to the beach. She also loved to fish, go crabbing, and enjoyed the special times she spent with her family and friends at her condo in Cherry Grove. Mrs. D’Angelo loved to cook, as did her husband, and they were well known for the great dishes they prepared. Mrs. D’Angelo was an extraordinary woman who lived a remarkable life and she will be missed by all who were fortunate to have known her. She was a loving mother and a special “Mimi” to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was also a wonderful sister, friend, cousin, and a special “Aunt Bobbie.” Mrs. D’Angelo was a member of the St. Andrews Catholic Church in Myrtle Beach and a member of The Dunes Club. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a son, Andrew Joseph “Andy” Carter; her special aunt, Miss Lee Hughes; her stepson, James D’Angelo, Jr.; and a brother-in-law, Charlie “Tex” Vandeventer. Survivors include a son, Richard Carter and his fiancée, Mary Beth Goodman of Jacksonville, Florida; one stepdaughter, Jodi Zaffiri and her husband, Steve, of Cresco, Pa.; one sister, Ruby Vandeventer of Harlingen, Texas; two grandchildren, Sara Elizabeth Carter and her fiancé, Brandon Maupin, and Jason Andrew Carter, all of Jacksonville, Florida; two great-grandchildren, Annabella Rose Maupin and Braden Lee Maupin, both of Jacksonville, Florida; two step grandchildren, Stephanie Gambrill and Lindsay Zaffiri , both of Pennsylvania; special friends, Pat and Ron Palucki of Myrtle Beach; several nieces and nephews, Karen Sessel of Illinois, Robert Vandeventer and his wife, Carol, of Colorado, Pam Vandeventer of Harlingen, Texas, Phyllis Minehart of Warminster, Pa., Joseph Butch of Tobyhanna, Pa. and Conway, S.C., Joan Beber of Warrington, Pa., Robert D’Angelo of Lutherville, Md., John D’Angelo of Telford, Pa. and Murrells Inlet, S.C., Pete Carroll of Horsham, Pa., Peggy Faust of Rehobeth Beach, De., Phyllis Noonan of Pottstown, Pa., William D’Angelo of Hopewell, N.J., Linda Bell of Sewell, N.J., Elaine Martin of Chalfont, Pa., Diane Peterson of Salem, N.J. and Lisa Myers of N.J.; and a host of other cousins, family, and friends that she loved dearly. The family will receive friends Friday evening, May 9, 2008, from 7 until 9 p.m. at Ward Funeral Home in Loris and at other times at the residence. A service to celebrate the life of Barbara D’Angelo will be held Saturday morning, May 10, 2008, at 10 a.m. from the Ward Funeral Home Chapel in Loris with the Rev. Lebron Crisp, the Rev. Jeff Wallace and Mr. Christopher L. Ward officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot at Mount Leon Cemetery in Longs. Casket bearers will be C.L. Carter, George Oliver, Curtis Hughes, Harry Carter, Billy D. Hardee and Keith Hardee. A reception will be held Saturday afternoon from 1 until 3 p.m., following the committal service, at The Dunes Club.
