Surfside Beach Betty A. Bast Betty A. Bast, 82, passed away on January 16, 2016, peacefully at her home with family and friends by her side. Betty fought a valiant battle with Breast Cancer for eight years. Mrs. Bast was born in Guthrie, OK on November 11, 1933. She was a graduate of Long Beach City College. Betty retired after 20 years as a realtor with Prudential Preferred Properties, Severna Park, MD. Betty worked part time locally in the retail business. She was a loving Wife, Mother and Grandmother. Betty was actively involved in the anti drug and alcohol movement during the Regan Administration. She became an advocate for local youth in the Pasadena, Maryland area. In an effort to keep young adults busy during summer months, she co- founded the Bay Country Summer Theater. She provided an outlet for local theater workshop training. Eventually, she drove the efforts to put on full Broadway style plays such as Bye Bye Birdie and Little Miss Mary Sunshine, at venues in the Magothy River Peninsula area including Downs Memorial Park. Her passion for the area youth lead to being invited to the White House to lunch with Former First Lady Nancy Regan. Betty was also involved with the Chesapeake Women's Club and participated in various charitable events. Betty was involved with AFS- American Field Service; a Foreign exchange student organization. She coordinated incoming students with host families in the Chesapeake High School Area. Her compassion for people and her love of the arts were instilled in her children and passed down to her grandchildren. Betty is survived by her husband, Ben Bast; children, Robert Guillory of Cave Creek, AZ, John Bast of Phoenix, AZ and Andrea Baumgartner of Myrtle Beach, SC; a sister, Judy Scott of Las Vegas, NV. Betty has four Grandchildren, Ashley and Mitchell Bast, Allyson and Logan Baumgartner of all Myrtle Beach, SC. A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
