Conway.... Betty Phillips Washington, age 82, wife of Samuel William Washington, Jr. of Sherwood Drive, died on December 21, 2008. Mrs. Washington was born on January 8, 1926 in Atlanta, Georgia, the daughter of the late Herman Grady Phillips, Sr. and Lucile Coker Phillips. During her early childhood she lived in Canton, Georgia later moving to Winnsboro, SC where she graduated from Mount Zion High School in 1942. Betty attended Coker College in Hartsville, SC for two years prior to transferring to The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she received a B.A. Degree in Sociology in 1947. While there she was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority. Following graduation she accepted a position with the Child Welfare Department in Conway, South Carolina for one year, after which she returned to The University of North Carolina to pursue graduate work in Child Welfare. In 1949, she continued her career in Child Welfare with the Charleston Welfare Department. Betty was married to Samuel William Washington, Jr. of Conway, SC in 1950 and resided on the west coast for two years while he fulfilled his commitment to the Navy during the Korean War. In 1952, the couple returned to Conway where she spent her remaining years. Betty was a member of the First Baptist Church of Conway, The Jamie Lewis Sunday School class and served as Leader of the Girls Auxiliary. She also served as Leader of Girl Scout Troop 84. She was an avid bridge player and was a member of two clubs for many years. Other favorite activities included enjoying the beach at the Surfside home and traveling annually with the Bemco group. Betty was the mother of two daughters, Lucile Washinton Coleman Stan and Anne Moore Washington, both of Charlotte, NC; grandmother to three grandchildren, Charlotte Coleman Crossland Brian, Meredith Clark Coleman, and Stanley David Coleman, III to whom she was affectionately known as "Bee". Other survivors include one brother, H.G. "Phil" Phillips Hannah of Winnsboro, SC and one sister, Anne Phillips Hamilton of Greenville, SC; a brother-in-law Robert "Bobby" Washington Ann of Conway and sister-in-law Martha "Marty" Washington of Florence, SC and Athens, GA; numerous nieces and nephews; and close family friend, Anne Newcomb. The family wishes to express deep gratitude to the caregivers, for their love and dedicated service : Rebecca Bellamy, Ora Dunlap, Loretta Dunlap, and Georgia Randall; Dr. John Wilson, Jr. and staff of Mercy Hospice. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 23, 2008 at 3:30 PM at the First Baptist Church of Conway. Interment will follow at Lakeside Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the church parlor one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Building Bridges Fund at the First Baptist Church, 603 Elm Street, Conway, SC 29526, or to the charity of one's choice. Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
