Carol L Heichel, born Carol Ann Luther on August 29, 1931, in Windber, PA, peacefully passed away Friday in Murrells Inlet, SC at the age of 91. Carol had previously lived in Warwick, NY, and Clearwater, FL. She was the beloved daughter of Foster Joseph and Eva Bower Luther. She is survived by her devoted children, Jay Heichel and his wife Alexandra, Randall Heichel and his wife Coleen, and Susan Whalen. Carol was a cherished grandmother to six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She is also remembered by her nieces Sheryl Murray and Toni Luther, along with numerous extended family members and friends. Carol was preceded in death by her brother Robert Luther and nephew Robert Luther Jr. Carol graduated with a bachelor's degree from State Teacher's College at Indiana and went on to earn a master's degree from the State University of New York at New Paltz. Her passion for education led her to a decades-long career as a teacher, retiring from the Warwick Valley Central School District in NY. An adventurer at heart, Carol's love for flying, initially cultivated alongside her father, continued with her son Jay, who both piloted her. Her spirit of exploration extended to her passion for hiking and travel. She traversed both local and international landscapes, with Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, NY, holding a special place in her heart. Carol possessed a remarkable knowledge of trees, flowers, and plants, reflecting her membership in organizations such as the Sierra, Appalachian Mountain, and Ramapo Mountain Ski clubs. Her pursuits also encompassed a talent for gaming. She was known to excel at Scrabble, Bridge, and various card games. Even in her final days, Carol triumphed over her opponents in a spirited game of Scrabble. As we bid farewell to Carol, let us remember her for her zest for life, her indomitable spirit, and her ability to infuse joy into every endeavor. Her legacy will forever be etched in our hearts and minds. A celebration of Carol's life will be held to honor her memory. Friends and family are invited to attend Tuesday evening, August 22, 2023, from 4-7pm at her daughter's home. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to one's charitable organization of choice in memory of Carol's passion for education and her love for the natural world.
