Dario Fonovic... A special person remembered and a beautiful life honored. After a long and courageous battle with cancer, our husband, father, grandfather, family member and friend, Dario Fonovic, of Myrtle Beach, passed away at 11:35 PM on October 30, 2014, while in hospice care in Conway. He was 75 years old. Dario was born in Krsan, Croatia, on February 8, 1939. He was the third of five children born to Maria and Marko Fonovic. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Toni. He is survived by sisters, Nicolena and Maria and brother, Zelko. On his own in the world from the age of 17, Dario emigrated to Italy and France while playing professional soccer. He was also an accomplished bicycle racer. The dream of a better life brought him to the United States where he proudly became a citizen on June 21, 1968. This happy event came shortly after he married the love of his life, the former Catherine "Fran" Kovac. They welcomed daughter, Lisa, in late 1968 and son Marko in 1970. The family resided in Devon and Monroe, Connecticut. Dario utilized the training he received as a diesel mechanic in Croatia to gain employment as a machinist. He was a valued employee at Bridgeport Machines, AVCO, and Dresser Industries. He especially enjoyed his time as a jet engine tester at AVCO. Upon retirement, Dario and Fran relocated to Myrtle Beach where he took up the sport of golf with his new friends. Dario would describe his best accomplishments as being a loving father to his children and their spouses, Vincent Maida and Jessica Fonovic, and an adoring grandfather to his three grandchildren, Devan Maida and Olivia and Max Fonovic. Dario could often be found tending to his garden and yard, playing golf, riding his bike, watching soccer, bike races and the news on T.V. and with his wife, enjoying the sunshine and the ocean. Dario will be remembered for his kind and loving spirit, generosity, and loyalty to friends and family. He will also be remembered for his bravery while fighting his two year battle with cancer. It is the families wish that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Cancer Society, 950 48th Ave. N., Suite 101 Myrtle Beach, SC 29577. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM Friday, November 7, 2014 at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel.
