With deep sadness we announce the passing of Don Zimbardo. He left us peacefully on August 31, 2024. He was a beacon of love and kindness, an example of all we aspire to be. Don was born in NYC on January 14, 1937, to Margaret and George Zimbardo. He was a brother to Philip, George and Vera. He married his loving wife, Joan on October 18, 1959, in NYC. In addition to his wife, he is survived by twins, daughter, Donna and husband Naguib Khoury and a son, Jonathan and wife Gail Zimbardo. He was also the proud grandfather of Alexa Rose and Zachary Zimbardo. He was a loving brother-in-law to Barbara and Walter Gizze, Rose Zimbardo, Christina Zimbardo and John Massimino. A proud uncle to Adam Zimbardo, Jeremy Gizze, Patricia Riedel, Neva Romano, Christopher Zimbardo, Zara Zimbardo and Tanya Doyle. He was part owner of a home improvement company in the Bronx, NY for over 50 years. Dons’ lifetime passion was his music. In his teens he discovered Jazz and followed that passion throughout his life. He played the trumpet and drums, and later became an accomplished vocalist. His musical prowess allowed him to play in numerous nightclubs throughout New York beside many very accomplished musicians. Once moving to Myrtle Beach in the Market Common he found a friend in Dan O’Reilly and his jazz band. He was then able to rekindle his love of singing, being seen many Friday nights at Travinia Restaurant. Whenever he could he found peace and solace being at the beach. It was truly his happy place. There, he felt closer to God. His faith followed him wherever he went. He was devoted to the Lord, and was able to show his devotion by helping build and finance a church and was a Warden of his church in New York. During his later years he could be seen throughout Market Common seated at his favorite spots, enjoying the people he saw and spoke to with kind words and a gentle touch. His family wishes to thank SC House Calls, MSA Hospice Care and all the private care givers for their support and loving care. In the twilight of his life, he found peace being surrounded by the music he loved. In his final moments he passed peacefully with his beloved wife Joan by his side, holding his hand, singing Sinatra songs to him. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM Saturday, September 28, 2024 at Church of the Resurrection, 8901 Hwy. 17 Bypass Surfside Beach, SC 29575. A reception will follow the service at the church. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, PO Box 1000 Dept 142 Memphis, TN 38101-9908.
