Conway...Doris Stevens Hedgepath, age 69, wife of the late James "Jimmy" C. Hedgepath and of Collins Street died Thursday at her residence. Mrs. Hedgepath was born in Conway, a daughter of the late Davis Alton Stevens and late Doris Mitchell Hardee Stevens. She graduated from Conway High School in 1961, received her BA from Winthrop College in 1965 followed by a Masters Plus 30 degree from the University of South Carolina. Prior to retirement, she had a career of teaching that spanned 35 years, teaching in several high schools in South Carolina with most of her career at Conway High School. Mrs. Hedgepath served as Chair of the English Department at Conway High School for many years and was the 1992-1993 Teacher of the Year for Horry County. She served as the sponsor of the CHS cheerleading squad for many years. The highlight of her teaching career was the opportunity to testify before US Congress. Mrs. Hedgepath was also a member of the Spadoni School of Education Board at Coastal Carolina University. Mrs. Hedgepath was a long standing member of First United Methodist Church in Conway where she served in many roles. She served as a former chair of the Staff Pastor Parish Committee and had taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and had served on the Alter Guild. Mrs. Hedgepath was a graduate of the Bible Study Fellowship Program. Mrs. Hedgepath served her community by volunteering with the Shepherds Table, City of Conway Lakeside Cemetery Committee and Horry County Historical Society. She was an active leader and President of the 1961 Class Reunion Committee. Mrs. Hedgepath loved working, gardening, traveling, reading, volunteering and spending quality time with her twin granddaughters who fondly referred to her as "Mickey". She was preceded in death by a twin brother, Davis N. Stevens. Surviving are: one son, William F. Hedgepath, II of Florence; one daughter, Catherine H. Dingle and her husband Alvin A. "Beau" Dingle, III; her older brother, Davis Henry Stevens and his wife Sally of Georgetown; two granddaughters, Mary Mitchell Dingle and Anna Altman Dingle of Conway; a sister-in-law, Laura G. Burns of Darlington and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral services will be held at 3 PM Sunday from First United Methodist Church in Conway with Rev. Mac Kinnett and Rev. Carl Harris officiating. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the Family Life Center of First United Methodist Church, Conway from 1:30 until 2:30 PM Sunday.
