Charles Raysor May, III, MD Dateline: Murrells Inlet, SC Dr. Chuck May, age 72, died Saturday, October 18, 2008 at Roper Hospital in Charleston, SC. Dr. May was born in Washington DC in 1936, the son of Dr. Charles R. Charlie May, Jr. and Mildred Turner May, and grew up in Bennettsville, SC. He graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1958 and in 1962 became the fourth generation to graduate from the Medical College of South Carolina. After completion of a Rotating Internship at the Medical College Hospital in Charleston, SC, he served as a general medical officer in the US Army in Germany. Returning to Bennettsville, SC, he became the third generation of his family to practice General Medicine there. After further training, he limited his practice to Anesthesiology in Bennettsville and Florence, SC. In 1983 he relocated to Fayetteville, NC where he developed the anesthesia protocol for the first private hospital based extra corporeal shock wave lithotripsy machine in the United States. In 1996, he retired to Murrells Inlet, SC. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Margaret Ann Atkinson May; one son, Charles R. May, IV Emily of Columbia, SC; two daughters, Lauranne May Auster Neil of Davenport, FL and Nelle May Stephenson of Murrells Inlet, SC; 3 grandchildren, Matty, Chas and Maggie; one brother, A. Matheson May Beth of Kennett, MO; one uncle, John May Betty of Bennettsville, SC; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved mother-in-law, Annie Laurie Bell Atkinson of Florence, SC. Dr. Chuck often just "Doc" was many things. He was a proud recipient of the Eagle Scout award; an Ordinary Seaman in the Merchant Marine Service; an outdoorsman, conservationist and Lifetime Sponsor Ducks Unlimited; handy man; decoy carver and award winning artisan; a caring physician and his own harshest critic. He spoke his mind when asked and marched to his own drum. He tried to love and understand his grandchildren and unconditionally loved his children. He adored his Margaret Ann. Memorial services will be held at 3:00pm Tuesday October 21, 2008 at Belin Memorial United Methodist church. The family will receive friends following the service in the small dining room, Belin Family Life Center.
