Edward “Eddie” Sun Biu Kwong, age 59, of Myrtle Beach, passed away November 23, 2023 at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center. Eddie, the youngest of seven children was born on September 27, 1964 in Hong Kong, China to the late Joe Sheung Kwong & Yuet Sim Yu. Eddie attended Hong Kong Holy Cross Elementary before immigrating to the United States with his family in July of 1975. Upon arriving in Myrtle Beach, his parents quickly got to work opening Chinese restaurants and he enrolled in Myrtle Beach Elementary. After a year, Eddie began attending East Tennessee State University Middle School when his family moved to Johnson City, TN where his father was busy opening Chinese restaurants in the Southeast. In 1978, the family settled in Smyrna, GA where he and his family worked in one of the oldest Chinese restaurants in the area. Eddie graduated with honors from Wills High School in 1982 and went on to study at Georgia State University. After graduating, with a Bachelors of Science degree in Mathematics and Computer Science, he dreamed of teaching but decided to join his father to help expand the family’s restaurant business. It was at this time, he founded UniMart, an international food brokerage company focusing on poultry and meat trading between United States and Asia. This allowed him to gain his vast knowledge of Southeast Asain food culture. In the late 80’s and early 90’s, Eddie along with his siblings continued to expand their father’s Chinese restaurant business along the east Carolinas area starting from Myrtle Beach, Garden City, Rockingham, Laurinburg, and Lumberton. During this time, through family business acquaintances, he met and married the love his life, Rosaleen Camp aka “Rosie”. After they were married, Eddie and Rosie decided to spread their own wings and opened up Sun Wah Chinese Restaurant in Surfside Beach. They welcomed their biggest joy of their lives, the birth of their son, Leland Y. Kwong. In 2004, Eddie opened up ENoodles & Co. Asian Bistro, creating an array of Asian fusion cuisine first of its kind in the Carolina’s food scene. Through his fearlessness, he forever changed the meaning of Chinese, Japanese, Thailand, Vietnamese and other Southeast Asian food in the Grand Strand as well as locations he helped develop in the both North and South Carolina. In 2010, Eddie was nominated by his fellow peers in the area and entered into the ABC News Nightline People’s Platelist, a contest that was to showcase the chefs and restaurateurs across the country with different food backgrounds. Eddie was selected as one of the top 20 finalists in the United States. Eddie will always be remembered for his bright smile, an attitude that was full of sunshine, a great sense of humor and advice that was both generous and valuable. Eddie had tremendous fortitude, never giving up despite difficult hardships he saw his father faced. He was blessed with a nurturing, kindhearted mother. With this foundation, Eddie provided unconditional kindness that brought many families together, helping them built successful lives in United States. Eddie loved to learn and looked to emulate the attitudes of people he looked up to. From Albert Einstein, he grew his passion for learning and knowledge. From George Carlin, he formed courage to say what was on his mind and not back down. Finally, from Anthony Bourdain, he pursued his passion for food and connection cultures. Eddie always said he wanted to live Bourdain’s life and have the best job in the world – eat, drink, love, and be merry with humility. Besides his parents, Eddie is preceded in death by his wife of 25 years, Rosaleen Camp Kwong, who passed away August 14, 2020. He is survived by his loving son, Leland Y. Kwong; siblings, Margaret Tse (Anthony), Connie Yee (Chun), William (HaiLi), Yim Jung (Clyde), Steve, Karren Kwong (Alex F) and many nephews, nieces, great nephews, and great nieces from both the Kwong and Camp families. Funeral Service will be held 2:00 PM, Sunday, December 3, 2023 at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel in Murrells Inlet, SC with visitation with the family starting at 1:00 PM. Burial will take place at a later date at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, NY. Those arrangements will be announced by the Wah Wing Sang Funeral Corp in Manhattan. Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel is serving the family with local arrangements.
