Myrtle Beach…Mr. Elvin D. "Al" Tirrell, age 85, widower of Wilma Hucks Tirrell, passed away Tuesday, November 1, 2016, at Myrtle Beach Manor. Born March 12, 1931, in Lewiston, ME, he was the son of the late Walter Elvin Tirrell and Christine Drew. Surviving are a son, James Anthony Reynolds and his wife, Jeanie, and a daughter, Karen R. Martin and her husband, Barry, all of Galivants Ferry. He has seven grandchildren: Tiffany R. Nichols (Warren), Jamie Reynolds (Amber), Heather R. Cook (Marcus), Shannon R. Coates (Jason), Drew E. Martin (Tiffany), Trent B. Martin (Ally), and Brett R. Martin (Cassie). Great-Grandchildren are Blane and Benji Butler, Hunter, Hank and Jarrett Reynolds, Heath, Anna, Hart and Katelyn Cook, Cole Coates, Madelyn and Evan Martin, and Doc Martin. Step-Great Grandchildren are Monty Rutheford, Tyler Follrod, and Trace Craver. Two sisters-in-law, Lorese H. Mcquinn (Bill) of Connecticut, and Rebecca A. Hucks of NC; and a brother-in-law, William Duke Hucks (Angie) and five nieces and one nephew. Al attended North Hollywood public schools, CA; graduated Speare Radio and Television Academy, Hollywood, CA; joined the U.S. Air Force March 1948 and was stationed in Germany, Saudi Arabia, France, England, and honorably discharged at Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, SC, April 1966. Al has always been involved in public and political service. At Hollywood High School he was a member of the Young Republican Party. While stationed at Myrtle Beach Air Force Base as Recreational Specialist, he was instrumental in increasing voter registration and participation in the 1968 Presidential election. Al was active in the Horry County Republican Party since 1966. Al was President of Bryan-Tirrell, Inc. and Around the World in 18 Holes Minigolf, Inc., Myrtle Beach, SC; Sec-Treas., Jungle Golf of Ft. Myers Beach, FL, Radio Announcer of DJ, Hobbs, NM, 1954; and Chairman of the Board, Creative Recreations, Socastee, SC, 1979-80. Commissions included: Member Horry County Voter Registration Board; Board of Visitors, Tara Hall Home for Boys, Georgetown, SC; and CETA Board, Horry, Georgetown and Williamsburg Counties, 1978. Organizations included: Sons of The American Revolution, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Free Masonry (Grady Masonic Lodge); American Legion; DAV; Silver Elephant Club of the SC Republican Party since 1968; Boy Scout of America; and Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels; Board of Directors Grand Strand Better Business Bureau, 1988; and Grand Strand Humane Society, Board of Directors; Political Record included: Vice-Chairman Six Congressional District Republican Party; Chairman Horry County Republican Party, 1979-82; Delegate to Republican National Convention; 1980, 84 and 88; Horry County Co-chairman, Reagan for President; 1980; Republican Nominee for State Senate, 1972; Delegate to the SC State Republican Convention, 1970, 72, 78, 80, 82 and 84. Horry County Chairman, Bush for President; 1988; 1st Vice Chairman Sixth Congressional Dist.; Field Rep to Former Congressman John L. Napier, 1981; Chairman Republican Party 1982-86 and Treasurer, 1987-88; Co-Chairman with Lois Eargle of the Horry County Republican Party; Horry County Election Commission, 1978-81; and Re-elect Strom Thurmond Myrtle Beach Finance Chairman. Appointment and Awards included: The Palmetto Gentleman Award; and Appointed by Gov. Campbell to the SC Tourism and Trade Committee; SC Dedicated Public Servant Award; Chairman Emeritus Horry County Republican Party; Grand Strand Humane Society Top Dog Award; Grand Strand Humane Society Guardian Angel Award; SC Commission for the Blind; Who's Who in American Politics 1999/2000; and Republican National Committee Eisenhower Commission. Vote Republican! Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Friday, November 4, 2016, at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel, with Rev. Gordon Graham officiating.
