Galivants Ferry...Ernestine Todd Hughes, wife of Franklin Delano Hughes departed earthly life, Sunday, December 6, 2015, at Conway Medical Center. Mrs. Hughes, 76 was born in Conway, SC the eldest daughter of Elma Faye Dorman and Ernest Todd. She was predeceased by a brother, Sam Todd. Mrs. Hughes was a member of Brown Swamp UMC, where prior to an illness actively attended for 52 years. She also participated in the United Methodist Women and Church Choir. Ernestine retired from Horry County Schools District Office. After retirement, she remained an active substitute teacher enjoying the time spent serving CFHS students. Ernestine loved gardening in her flowers and being outdoors. Her favorite hobby was travel. She especially loved her trips to Wyoming and Christmases in the mountains. As most avid travelers, she never met a stranger. Her witty euphemisms and antics always kept everyone laughing and entertained. Ernestine was a well respected and very active leader in family support for members of the S.C. National Guard and their families. She made many friends throughout state. Ernestine received various awards and recognitions for her tireless effort and her expert leadership in supporting the families of deployed soldiers. She was a past president and enjoyed the meetings, conventions, and organizing. Her greatest joys in life were her family, friends, her two labs; Scarlet and Sophie, two horses; Molly and Madeline and four kittens. This wonderful woman will be missed by her family, friends and pets. Heaven is truly receiving a gem. In addition to her husband she is survived by a daughter Lisa Hughes Thompkins; a son, Kevin Delano Hughes; a grandson Dillon Hughes Thompkins, all of Conway; 3 brothers, Rayford Todd (Cathy)of Alaska, Lindy Todd (Dorothy) and Alex Todd both of Conway. A funeral service will be held 2:00PM Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at Brown Swamp United Methodist Church with Dr. Ray Lundy officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 - 7:00 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.
