Franklin Delano Hughes, CSM Ret. left this earthly dwelling to join his loved ones in heaven on Tuesday November 30, 2016, after a short illness. He was the beloved son of Fred A. and Myrtis Richardson Hughes of Horry. Delano graduated from Aynor High School and Coker College. He retired from SC Army National Guard, after 42 years of dedicated military service, and where he proudly served during Desert Storm. He was a lifelong, active member of Brown Swamp United Methodist Church. In early years, he was a member of the Horry County School Board and the Aynor Lions Club. God, the military, family, friends, and his pets were his passions. He left a lasting legacy with his family and friends; always leading by example. His favorite words of wisdom: Never Ever Give Up, define the life he lived and the man he was every day. Delano loved to travel, Ernestine his wife of 53 years and their children, joined him on adventures across the United States. As much as he loved to travel, he always relished coming home. He knew his two labs Scarlet and Sophie, two horses Madelyn and Molly, and a herd of kittens were waiting to welcome the family's arrival. Delano loved football, he could be found each weekend cheering on the Gamecocks and the Panthers, in the good times and the challenging times. He was an avid reader and news hound, he kept up with all details and loved to sit and discuss everything. He was especially proud that someone wants to make America great again. Franklin Delano Hughes was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Ernestine Todd Hughes, two brothers; Joseph D. and Dugan Hughes, two sisters; Louise Hughes Lundy and Lenore Hughes Jones. He is survived by a Daughter; Lisa Hughes Tompkins, a son; Kevin Delano Hughes, a Grandson; Dillon Hughes Thompkins all of Conway, and one sister; Willa Maude Bailey of Florence. Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Sunday December 4 , 2016 at Brown Swamp United Methodist Church, with pastor Ann Kovan and Dr. Ray Lundy Officiating. Burial will follow in church cemetery.
