Gertrude "Trudy" Lewis Melton Gertrude "Trudy" Lewis Melton died Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at Loris Extended Care Center in Loris, SC. Born October 6, 1925, Trudy was the daughter of Jesse E. and Jessie Gore Lewis of Galivants Ferry, SC. She was the youngest and last surviving of seven children. Trudy graduated from Winthrop University in 1947 with a degree in sociology. A long-time resident of Columbia, SC, she retired in 1983 from the SC State Department of Social Services division of Children and Family Services where she was an adoptions specialist. Trudy enjoyed singing and playing the piano and shared her gift of song with many, singing for weddings and other occasions. She was an active member of Shandon Baptist Church where she was a member of the choir and a participant for over ten years in the church's production of The Singing Christmas Tree. She was also a Sunday school teacher, volunteer in the church???s prayer room and a regular presence on numerous mission trips helping prepare and serve meals to the volunteer laborers. An avid traveler, Trudy visited all 50 states and many countries including Oberammergau, Germany to see the passion play and Point Barrow, Alaska, the northernmost point in the US. She was predeceased by brothers Andrew L. Lewis, Marvin E. Lewis, Sam J. Lewis, Tola E. Lewis and a sister Lila Lewis Lennon. She is survived by nieces JoAnn Lennon Durner Hoyt, Wilmington, NC; Connie Francis Lennon Monroe, Cape Carterett, NC; NC; Gloria Lewis Lovett, Cullman, AL; Deborah Lewis, Augusta, GA; Karen Lewis Staples, Aynor, SC; Dianne Lewis, Asheville, NC; Linda Lewis Johnson, Galivants Ferry, SC; Angela Lewis Conary, Elizabeth City, NC and nephews Tola E. Lewis, Jr, Elizabeth City, NC; Kenneth Lewis, Marion, SC; Jesse Lewis and Michael Lewis, both of Galivants Ferry, SC, and numerous great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by niece Anita Lewis Moreland and nephew Sammie Lewis. Funeral services will be Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 3::0 pm at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel, 606 Beaty St, Conway, SC with burial immediately following in Hillcrest Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the services on Saturday from 2:30-3:30 pm.
