James Haselden Chapman Captain, U. S. Navy, Retired 1923 - 2015 Capt. James H. Chapman of Litchfield Plantation, Pawleys Island, passed peacefully on August 20, 2015. Born in Timmonsville in 1923 to Mrs. Mary Sherard Chapman and Mr. Elting L. Chapman, he was the youngest of three sons. His older brothers were Mr. Elting L. Chapman, Jr. of Florence and Garden City, and Dr. William S. Chapman of Myrtle Beach. His family lived in Timmonsville until the early 1930s then moved to Florence when his father was elected Florence County Treasurer, a position that he held for forty years. James, as he was called by family, or Jim, as he was known by friends, attended the University of South Carolina for three years and then received an appointment from Congressman John L. McMillan to the U. S. Naval Academy, Class of 1947 which graduated in 1946. Two years later while in flight training in Pensacola, Florida, James met and then married Miss Jeane Morgan of Clayton, Missouri, who was a flight attendant for Eastern Airlines flying out of Miami Beach. Jim had a rewarding thirty-year Naval career that took him, and often his wife and their two children, to twenty duty stations in such locations as China, Trinidad, Bermuda, Key West, and Annapolis. Highlights of his career included commanding a squadron of patrol planes tracking submarines off Alaska, command of an ammunition supply ship off Vietnam, and command of a Marine transport and helicopter carrier in the Mediterranean Sea. Fortunately, he and his family returned several times each year to spend holidays and summer vacations with his parents, brothers, and their families in Florence, Myrtle Beach, Pawleys Island, and Garden City. It was only natural that after his Naval career, he would retire to his native South Carolina. First building a home in Litchfield Country Club and then moving to Litchfield Plantation, James and Jeane stayed active enjoying family, lifelong friends, tennis and boating, church, vestry, and an assortment of volunteer roles. James, Jim, Dad, Daddy, Granddad, and Great Granddad loved his family dearly, was true to his friends, and set an enduring example of good character, abiding faith, and personal decorum. Jeane, his wife of sixty years, passed peacefully in her sleep in 2009. James is survived by his daughter Mrs. Susan C. Vogel, her husband Bruce, and their son Bryce, of Pawleys Island, New Providence, NJ, and Charlottesville, VA, respectively. He is also survived by his son, Capt. James H. Chapman, Jr., retired, his wife Susie, and their son Stephen, daughter Elizabeth and her husband Cliff and their children Marin and Sam, and son James, III and his wife Kerri and their twins Lilian and James, IV, of Virginia Beach, Carlsbad, CA, and Richmond, VA, respectively. Lastly, James is survived by his and Jeane’s loving and loyal dog Molly. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 29th at three o’clock in the afternoon in the old chapel of All Saints Church, 3560 Kings River Road in Pawleys Island, with The Rev. Clay A. Millener officiating. Following the church service, there will be a graveside committal service in the adjoining cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends at Capt.
