James Russell Dentel Sr. passed away on Thursday, July 4, 2024 at his home. Mr. Dentel was born in Queens, NY to the late Harriet Kiely and Russell Dentel. James (also affectionately known as Jim, Jimmy, and Poppa) moved from Queens to Lake Ronkonkoma, NY where he met his lifelong best friends, Jim Saladino (Noreen), Joe Quartararo (Mabel), and future wife, Peggy Ann Beaudoin. He graduated from Sachem High School in 1965, and went on to receive an Associate Degree from Suffolk Community College, a Bachelor of Science Degree in K-9 Social Studies Education from SUNY New Paltz. While at New Paltz, Jim married Peggy Ann. Peggy and Jim moved to Shirley, NY where they raised their three children. Jim returned to Sachem School District for 33 years as a teacher, coach, and Assistant Principal, during which time he earned a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies Degree from SUNY Stony Brook, and a Professional Diploma in Educational Administration from L.I.U. C.W. Post. He also became a Board of Education Member and soccer coach at Longwood Central School District. Jim retired in 2002 and later moved to Myrtle Beach, S.C. In his free time, Jim enjoyed coaching soccer, baseball, and basketball in community youth leagues, both in his time in New York and when he moved to Myrtle Beach. Other hobbies included photography, sailing, and spending time at the beach. His greatest joy was being Poppa to Hannah, Sami, Rosemary, JJ, and Lilli. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-mother; Mildred Reilly, sister; Jean Mauro, brothers; Robert and Richard Handowski and sister in law; Maureen Beaudoin. James is survived by his wife of 55 years; Peggy Ann Dentel, mother in law; Rosemary Beaudoin, sons; James Russell Dentel Jr. (Andrea) of Shirley, NY and Jason Richard Dentel (Courtney) of Palmyra, NY, a daughter; Jacquelyn Renee Chadick (M.J.) of Myrtle Beach, SC, grandchildren; Hannah Dentel (Brent Colf), Sami Dentel of Palmyra, Rosemary Chadick, “JJ” James Joseph Chadick of Myrtle Beach, SC and Lillian Dentel of Palmyra, NY, a sister; Arlene Richter and brothers in law; Richard, Jeffrey (Janet), Dennis, Curtis (Paula) and Thomas (Kathy) Beaudoin, close friends; Jim Campbell and Marcia Donofrio, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 PM on Thursday, July 11, 2024 at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
