Janet Ann Stein

Janet Ann Stein, age 75, wife for 50 years of the late Capt. George D. Stein, Jr. US Navy Retired, of Country Club Drive, died Friday, June 25, 2004 at Conway Medical Center after a long and courageous fight with cancer. Janet was born and raised in Nebraska, a daughter of the late Hugh Clark and Edith Josephine Abrahamson Thomas. She was educated in the public schools of Bertrand, NE, and graduated from the University of Nebraska. At the university, she was a member of the Rho Chapter of the Alpha Xi Delta Sorority. She remained an avid Cornhusker football fan and enjoyed a spirited rivalry with several local friends who were Oklahoma supporters. During her 29 years as a Navy wife, she served on many committees and as a sponsor for several wives groups. Along with other military wives, she was invited to a reception at the White House as a "thank you" for helping address Christmas cards for President and Mrs. Jimmy Carter. Her husbands military assignments took her to live in Virginia, Maryland, California, Florida, Hawaii and Germany. Janet moved to Conway in 1980 upon her husband's retirement from active Naval service. She quickly became involved in community activities as a poll worker for city elections, and for many years as an active participant in the Tom Thumb Weddings as a member of the Fine Arts Club. She was also active in the breast cancer support program "Reach to Recovery". Her favorite pre-occupation was playing bridge with several ladies groups in the Conway Community. With her husband Janet joined Trinity United Methodist Church shortly after their arrival in Conway. She was a loyal member of the church chancel choir for over 22 years, was a member of the Ladies Fellowship Class and for many years played the piano for the Men's Fellowship Class. She was a loving mother of two daughters, Sue Ann Farmer and her husband Dale of Jacksonville, FL and Elizabeth Ann Whitehouse of North Rose, NY; five grandchildren, Brian and Lauren Farmer, Shannon Tommy and Katie Whitehouse; one great-grandchild, Katie Whitehouse. Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Monday from Trinity United Methodist Church with Rev. Carl Hunsucker officiating. Burial will follow in the Veteran's section of Hillcrest Cemetery, directed by Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel. The family will receive friends from 4-6 PM Sunday at the funeral home.
