Dateline…Myrtle Beach Joanne Tedder Spencer, age 79, wife of James T. Spencer, passed away, Tuesday, June 07, 2016 at Conway Medical Center in Conway, SC. Mrs. Spencer was born in Lee County, NC, and raised in Raleigh, NC. She was the daughter of the late Rev. Russell A. Tedder and Jessie Hall Tedder. She was a graduate of Broughton High School and attended Peace College in Raleigh, NC. Mrs. Spencer also graduated from the Institute of Government at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She was of the Baptist faith and was the pianist for her church in Raleigh for many years. While living in New Bern, NC, Mrs. Spencer served as an Executive Secretary to Dr. Thurman E. Brock, President of Craven Community College, and retired in 2002 after serving fifteen years as the first "Certified" Municipal Clerk for the Town of Morehead City, NC. During her career, she was actively involved in many clubs, civic organizations and fundraisers. She served on the NC Symphony Board of Carteret County, Junior Women's Club, Beaufort NC Historic Association, American Business Women's Association (ABWA), NC Municipal Clerk's Association, International Institute of Government, Dunes Club of Atlantic Beach, NC, NC Coterie Club, Morehead City, NC, and many others too numerous to mention. Mrs. Spencer was a non-judgmental person with many talents and great enthusiasm and passion for life. She loved traveling, art, music, food, and dancing. Mrs. Spencer will be missed by those whose lives she touched. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Gary Wade Tedder. Surviving in addition to her husband of 56 years are; her two children, Thomas Russell Spencer and Carmen Spencer of Raleigh, NC, Carol Mischelle Spencer and Corey Long, Jr. of Morehead City, NC; her two grandchildren, Thomas Garrett Spencer and Sophia Danielle Spencer both of Raleigh, NC; two nephews, two nieces, one grand nephew, and four grand nieces. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, June 10, 2016 at Hillcrest Cemetery in Conway, SC with Rev. Wesley Peyton officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one's' choice.
