John Barnes, 92, passed away peacefully on August 5 after a short illness at Tidelands Waccamaw Hospital in Murrells Inlet, SC, near where he currently resided with his daughter and son-in-law in Surfside Beach, SC. John was born September 14, 1929, in Rensselaer, IN, the son of the late Herbert & Anna (Stein) Barnes. He graduated from Rensselaer High School in May 1947. On March 24, 1951, he married Virginia Catherine Dewey at his parents’ home in Rensselaer. This began their adventure of living in Illinois, California, and Arizona while he served in the United States Air Force from 1950-1954 during the Korean War. John served as a radio and radar repairman on a KC-29 Air Refueler in Great Britain, Iceland, Libya, and several bases in North Africa. He was honorably discharged in 1954, and they returned to Indiana to begin farming in Benton County where they resided and raised their family until retirement 49 years later. After retirement John enjoyed working part time for Dow Agrosciences, wintering in Lake Placid, Florida, and spending time fishing, playing euchre, and enjoying time with his family and friends. John was a kind, loving, loyal man and will be missed by many! John was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Lafayette, IN, and previously at Remington United Methodist Church where he served in many leadership and service positions. John was preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years, Virginia; his son, Rex Lee Barnes; and his sisters Pauline (Lambert) and Betty (Dyche). John is survived by his daughter, Lori Frauhiger and his son-in-law, Ken Frauhiger of Surfside Beach, SC; his granddaughter, Grace Frauhiger, of Myrtle Beach, SC; his grandson, Josh Frauhiger (wife, Heather) and great grandsons, Bricklee and Baker all of Lafayette, IN. John is also survived by several loving nieces and nephews from Indiana, Kentucky, and California. Cremation services are being provided by Goldfinch Funeral Home in Murrells Inlet, SC, and online condolences may be posted at www.goldfinchfuneralhome.com A graveside service will be held to honor John’s life at Memory Gardens in Rensselaer, IN, on September 22, 2022, at 10:00 AM CST.
