Murrells Inlet….John W. Marlow John Wilbur Marlow age 95, passed away Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at his residence. Born on September 3, 1920 in the Burgess Community of Horry County, he was a son of the late John Wesley and Elizabeth P. Marlow. Mr. Marlow graduated from Socastee High School in 1937 and the University of South Carolina in 1951. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII as a Gun Captain aboard USS Bennion DD662 in the Pacific Theatre and was awarded 9 major battle stars. Mr. Marlow was employed with the MBAFB Civil Engineering Organization at Myrtle Beach AFB for 37 years. On many occasions he directly assisted local work persons in securing temporary and permanent federal employment. He served as Socastee HS trustee, and was a member and office holder at Collins Creek Baptist Church. Upon retirement, he became pro-active in several civic and community developmental organizations. In 1997, he initiated the formation of the Greater Burgess Community Association. He served on two school naming committees, St. James HS and Burgess Elementary. He was a contributor and design consultant on the 1906 Burgess post office replica display in the Horry County museum branch located at Burgess Elementary school. He served on two separate South Strand Evacuation route committees, highway improvement study groups, drainage and environmental project studies and other local and civic groups such as South Strand Helping Hand and Burgess community Hall of Fame committee. He was preceded in death by his wife Mildred Fowler Marlow; two sisters, Pearl V. Heaton and Ruby V. Lewis. Survivors include his son, John Wilbur Marlow, II and his wife Tiffany; grandchildren, Morgan, Joshua and Abigail; a brother, William Marlowe and his wife Louise of Ft. Mill, SC and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, April 16, 2016 at Live Oak/Collins Creek Church, 11331 Hwy. 707 Myrtle Beach, SC 29576 with Reverend Campbell Thames officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 PM Friday, April 15, 2016 at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel.
