John Taylor

John E. Taylor, 75, passed away on July 14, 2014, after a courageous battle with cancer at his home in Pawleys Plantation where he resided for more than 20 years. A son of the late William D. Taylor and Haskell D. Yancey-Taylor. Lt. Col. Taylor was born on July 28, 1938 in Barney, GA. Having earned an associates degree at Middle Georgia College in Cochran, GA, he entered Valdosta State College where he was awarded a bachelors of science degree in 1960. Under the auspices of the United States Air Force, he went on to earn a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Florida Institute of Technology. Lt. Col. Taylor began his 21 years of military service as a personnel officer upon his commissioning as a 2nd Lieutenant at the United States Officers Training School in Texas. Assignments followed in Spain, England, Massachusetts, Nebraska and Washington, DC. While at Westover Air Force Base in Massachusetts, he met and married Judith Christine West in February 1968. Judith predeceased him in 2008. Following his military career, he held executive marketing positions with companies in Washington D.C. before retiring to Pawleys Island in 1994. An avid golfer, he was a member of Pawleys Plantation Golf and Country Club and in 2013 won the coveted Derby Trophy, one of the club's major golf tournaments. Lt. Col. Taylor is survived by his loving son and daughter, David M. Taylor of Westminster, Massachusetts and Deborah A. Wilcox of Bowie, Maryland; their children Delaney, Sydney and Dylan Taylor and Skylar Wilcox; brothers, James Mack Taylor of Macon, Georgia and William D. Taylor of Tallahassee, Florida and sisters, Betty Williamson of Warner Robins, Georgia and Mary Alice Griffin of Valdosta, Georgia. A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 AM, Holy Cross Faith Memorial Episcopal Church, 113 Baskerville Drive, Pawleys Island, SC on July 18, 2014.
