John Weiss

John E. Weiss, age 91, went to his eternal home and savior Jesus on May 2nd, 2014. He passed away peacefully, at home surrounded by his loving wife of 68 years, Shirley May, his children and their spouses. He was born on May 9, 1922, to the late Johann Friedrich Weiss and Florentine Suzanne Petrie (Weiss) and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, one of seven children. John was a graduate of the University of Cincinnati with a degree in transportation management. He is a veteran of World War II. He served in the Army as a Staff Sergeant in northern France, Rhineland, the Ardennes, and Central Europe, and is a recipient of the Bronze Star. He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1953 as a Master Sergeant. John worked for the New York Central Railroad in Cincinnati, Ohio, Champion Paper Company in Hamilton, Ohio, and Norfolk Southern railway in Washington, DC, in various management positions. He retired from Norfolk Southern in 1986 in Frederick, MD and moved to Pawleys Island, SC in 2003. John was an excellent woodworking craftsman and stained glass artisan, creating many beautiful furniture pieces and art objects. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather to his family. He is survived by a younger brother, Clifford Weiss; 5 children: Douglas (and Leslie) Weiss of Pawleys Island, SC, Barbara (and Tom) Parnell of Virginia Beach, VA, Vicki (and Tony) Aiken of Virginia Beach, VA, Debbi (and John Jr.) Hipkins, of Pawleys Island, SC, and Janet (and Mike) Dihmes of New Market, MD; 14 grandchildren: Nicholas (and Kaye) Weiss; Lisa Weiss (and Jordan Nelms); Ryan (and Amanda) Parnell; Colleen Parnell; Jesse (and Leslie) Aiken; Briana Aiken (and Jason Simms); Marisa Aiken (and Patrick Dalessio); Jason Hipkins; Melanie (and Stephen) Kiernan; Sarah Dihmes; Andrew Walters (and Tia Mothersill); Rebecca (and Dustin) MacBrayne; Tony (and Erika) Dihmes; and Colin Walters; and 10 great-grandchildren: Josie, Nicholas, Claire, Violet, Nora, Jillian, Avery, Tiasia, Samuel, and Andrew Jr. Memorial Mass will be 11:00 AM, Tuesday, May 7, 2014 at Precious Blood of Christ Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to Father Pat's Lunch Kitchen at Precious Blood of Christ Catholic Church, 1633 Waverly Road, Pawleys Island, SC 29585.
