Surfside Beach, SC Jon Aaron Mayhew, 43, passed away at his home in Surfside Beach, SC on Saturday, January 10, 2015. Although he battled Heart Disease for many years, he maintained his cheerful and positive nature. He had a light in him that allowed him to fight the good fight for a life that ended way too early. Mr. Mayhew was born in Davison, Michigan to Donald Howell and Mary Ruth Mayhew who preceded him in death. He graduated from Mooresville High School in Mooresville, NC and in 1993, received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications/Journalism from Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC. He worked as a Reporter for The Observer News-Enterprise and The Lincoln Times News, and he served as Editor for the Lincoln Tribune before beginning his own newspaper, The Carolina Scoop, in 2008. His career allowed him to work closely with various public service agencies including the Lincoln County Child Advocacy Center/Coalition Against Child Abuse, where he dressed up as one of "Barker's Beauties" on their version of "The Price is Right" for an annual fund raiser. He was an avid promoter of Law Enforcement Officers, Firefighters, and Emergency Management Service Workers. Known in the wrestling business as "Handsome Johnny Crook", Mayhew served as announcer, commentator and manager for the Millennium Wrestling Federation and American Pro Wrestling, before retiring in early 2012. He loved the wrestling business with a passion like no other. Mr. Mayhew will be especially remembered for his love of old sit-coms and imitating people from Carroll O'Connor's character "Archie Bunker" and Dana Carvey's "The Church Lady" to presidents George Bush and Bill Clinton. His sense of humor and belly laugh were infectious to everyone around him. On May 28, 1995, he married Elizabeth Ross, his best friend. They were true companions and always inseparable throughout their marriage. Their love for each other grew as did their love for Jesus Christ as evidenced in the conduct, lifestyle and volunteer service for their church. In addition to his wife, Elizabeth surviving are his Aunt Millie Orbison and husband Jerry of Mooresville, NC; sisters in law, Cathy Gilleland and husband Robert of Sanford, NC and Carolyn Ross of Columbia, SC; brother in law, David Ross and wife Allison of Greer, SC; nieces, Jill Gilleland-Reddick, Catherine Poplin and Marianne Ross; nephews, Robby Gilleland, David Poplin and Chad Ross; great niece, Carson Reddick and great nephews, Carter Reddick and Miles Gilleland; Goddaughters, Kristin, Candace and Cheyenne Huss; his best pals, dogs, Shellie and Peanut Butter, also survive. Memorial services will be 1:00 PM, Sunday, January 18 at NewSpring Church, held at St. James High School, 10800 Hwy 707, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576.
