Loris, SC… Mr. Joseph “Jody” Fate Johnson, age 78 of Loris, SC, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, December 17, 2023. Born December 8, 1945, in Mullins, SC, he was the son of the late Ebb Johnson, Sr. and Hattie Bell Jones Johnson. Mr. Johnson was drafted into the US Army on October 27, 1965, and served until 1967. During this time, he served in active duty during the Vietnam War. He was in the 4th Battalion 28th Artillery. During his service, Mr. Johnson was a gunner of a 155 mm Howitzer, and he was a sharpshooter. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Bronze Star. After his service to our country, he continued to serve the community in Pensacola, Florida as a service manager for Bob Salter Chevrolet for 13 years. He then worked for the Pensacola Naval Air Station for the remainder of his time in Florida. In 1987, Mr. Johnson moved back to his home state of South Carolina and opened a grocery store in Mullins, SC. After selling the grocery store, he worked for Johnson Repair Service until he retired due to health issues. Along with his parents, Mr. Johnson was predeceased by his brothers, Henry “Lester”, Roger Dale, Randell Wayne, Major, Leon, Ebb Jr., and Ed and his sisters, Corine, Shirley, Shelby, Winnie, Mary, Bera, and Loraine. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Sarah Johnson; two daughters, Tonya Johnson and Lisa Johnson Collins (Lee); a grandson, Elijah Joseph Johnson; his remaining brother, James Brooks Johnson (Ruth); and many special nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 1:00 PM-2:00 PM at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 Friday, December 22, 2023, at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Loris Chapel with Rev. Lloyd Phipps officiating and eulogy by Rusty Johnson. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Berea Baptist Church Cemetery.
