Galivant Ferry, SC Marjorie Russell Holliday, widow of John Monroe Johnson Holliday, passed away peacefully at her home in Galivants Ferry surrounded by loved ones on June 7, 2014. She was born in Florence,SC on July 19, 1920, daughter of Blanche Register Russell and Samuel Ota Russell. She attended Queens College and the University of South Carolina from which she received her BA Degree. She married John Monroe Johnson Holliday in 1943 and moved to Galivants Ferry where she flourished providing a warm and loving home and raised three children, George, Russell and Christy. Margy was a devoted and supportive wife, a loving mother who taught her children Christian values: the difference in right and wrong, that actions speak louder than words and "to do unto others as you would have them do unto you." She was a doting grandmother, a giving and loyal friend and a generous and caring person for all she encountered. She was an excellent dancer having danced on roller skates on stage in New York as a child. In addition, she was an avid golfer, bridge enthusiast, gardener of both flowers and vegetables and an energetic fisherman. She was famous for "Margy's Garden" where the best butter beans and sweet corn abounded. In fact, there is now a "Margy's Garden" at Brookgreen Gardens. She was strong and selfless throughout her life, had a wonderful sense of humor and always had a smile on her face. She was the epitome of an elegant Southern lady. She is survived by her older sister, Ethel Russell Wright of Greenville, SC, her two daughters, Marjorie Russell Holliday (Hal Cottingham) and Christian Monroe Holliday Douglas (David Douglas.) She is also survived by her grandchildren, Christian Monroe Holliday Douglas Schaumber (Drew Schaumber), Marjorie Russell Holliday Douglas Powell (Taylor Powell) , David Duvall Douglas, Jr. and her dedicated caregiver and "other" daughter Lila McGraw. She was also proud to welcome her first great grandchild John Douglas Schaumber this past April. She is predeceased by her sister, Mary Lenora "Pug" Russell Curry, her brother Samuel Ota Russell Jr. and her son George Judson Holliday III. There will be a funeral service at 11:00 on Tuesday, June 10, at her home The Pines in Galivants Ferry followed by a Visitation and Celebration of Margy at the house. The interment will be 2:00 PM, at Rose Hill Cemetery in Marion, SC.
