Dr. Martin L. (Marty) Gluntz, age 85, a 19 year resident of Wachesaw Plantation, Murrells Inlet, SC and formerly of Hershey, PA died on November 10, 2016, while being cared for at the Tidelands Hospice House in Georgetown, SC. He was a native of Steelton, PA, son of Hazel (Westhafer) and Martin G1untz (both deceased). A graduate of Steelton High School, Steelton, PA; Lebanon Valley College, Annville, PA; and the University of Delaware, Newark, DE, where he earned a M.S. and PhD in Organic Chemistry. He was a US Army Veteran, serving at Camp Gordon, GA, in the Military Police, plus was a fitness training instructor and a member of the Camp's baseball team. His team participated in the 3rd Army Tournament where he played against men who went on to play in the major leagues. Most recently, Dr. G1untz was an international business consultant, specializing in the food industry. He retired in 1996 from Hershey Foods as Vice President Technical Services, Hershey International Division. During his 26 1/2 years at Hershey, he was Production Manager of the Hershey Chocolate Plant; while working in product development, he was responsible for developing the Special Dark bar and the Kit Kat bar for the US market. Before joining Hershey he was a plant manager and plant chemist with Tenneco Chemical Co., and a chemist with American Cyanamid. Dr. G1untz was a member of the Wachesaw Plantation Club where he enjoyed playing golf, tennis and socializing with friends. He was a long-time member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Pawleys Island where he served on the Church Council for 6 years, was an active member of the Property Committee and enjoyed volunteering for all the children's and youth programs. Throughout his life, he was a dedicated volunteer for many nonprofit and charitable organizations in the communities where he lived and worked. Most recently he served as a mentor in the Early College High School Program of Horry County, SC. He was a former President of the Lebanon Valley College Alumni Association and a long-time member of the Board of Trustees of Lebanon Valley College, currently a Trustee Emeritus. During his four years at Lebanon Valley College, he played on the college's baseball and basketball teams. He was a member of the 1952-53 LVC Basketball Team (the Cinderella Team), which participated in the 1953 NCAA Eastern Regional Basketball Tournament (Sweet 16) in Raleigh, N.C . His team was inducted into the Lebanon Valley College Sports Hall of Fame and the Central Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame. Marty enjoyed traveling, especially internationally (visited 64 countries); playing the guitar and spending time with his family and friends. His first wife, Marilyn (Gingrich), died in 1976. In 1977, he married Karen McHenry, who survives him. He is also survived by his two daughters - Marti Lynn Gluntz Reese of Lancaster, PA; Marcia Lee and her husband, Lt Colonel (US Army) Robert D. Montz of Carlisle, PA; three sons - Michael and wife, Maureen Groden Gluntz of Pittsburgh, PA; Matthew Gluntz and Marcy Perez, of Tampa, FL; Mitchell Gluntz of Harrisburg, PA; five grandchildren - Bradley Van Scyoc and wife, Monica; Kathleen and Emily Gluntz; Amber and Blake Montz; and one great-grandson Zachary Van Scyoc. Contributions in memory of Marty may be made to St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 65 Crooked Oak Dr., Pawleys Island, SC 29585, or to Tidelands Community Hospice, 2591 N. Fraser Street, Georgetown, SC 29440. There will be a private burial service at the Hershey Cemetery, Hershey, PA and a Celebration of Life Service held at St. Peter's Lutheran Church on Saturday, December 17th at 11:00am.
