Murrells Inlet…Mary Elia Walters Mary Elia Walters, 86, passed away surrounded by family at her home in Murrells Inlet, SC on Friday, February 15, 2019. She was born in Williamson, WV, to Italian immigrant parents, the late Pasquale and Frances (Gerardi) Elia. There, she met and married her devoted husband of 63 years, Steve Walters, who predeceased her. They were both known for strong faith, and she envisoned their reunion with God. Mary, also known as “Tootsie,” will be remembered by many for her love of sewing and baking, and in particular, her “pita” (a traditional family recipe). She operated an Italian restaurant in Williamson for 13 years. Her home was always open to neighborhood kids, and all present were constantly encouraged to eat. She was the epitome of motherhood. There was nothing she enjoyed more than spending time with her children and her family. She was a proud, encouraging, and loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many. She is survived by her four children: Stephen Walters (Robbin) of Murrells Inlet, SC, Dr. Torin Walters (Terri) of Huntington, WV, Maria Hughes (Mark Goldner) of Holly Ridge, NC and BillyWalters of Murrells Inlet, SC; grandchildren, Dr. Eric Walters(Michelle) of San Luis Obispo, CA, Drs. Brogan Fulks (Dano) of Knoxville, TN, Calla Walters of Morgantown, WV, Torin A. Walters of Chapel Hill, NC, Mara Walters of Elon, NC, Sophia Walters of Knoxville, TN, Dylan Hughes of Morgantown, WV, Eliana Hughes of Morgantown, WV, Chance Walters of Princeton, WV and Chelsey Walters of Orlando, FL; great-grandchildren, Lily and Clara Walters. She was preceded in death by her husband, Steve F. Walters; a grandson, Joshua S. Walters; two brothers, Ralph Elia, Joseph Elia and a sister, Katherine (Elia) Kitka. A memorial mass will be held at St. Michael’s Church in Garden City, SC on Monday, February 18, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. Following the mass, family and friends will gather at the home of Steve and Robbin Walters at 23 Cyclamen Court in Murrells Inlet, SC from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Goldfinch Funeral home is in charge of the local arrangements. Mary will be buried alongside her husband Steve at Mountain View Memory Gardens in Maher, West Virginia. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Amedisys Hospice, 391 Seaboard Street, Unit 6, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577. Special thanks to the many Hospice personnel and to her friend and caregiver Theresa Myers.
