Michael Hughes Mike Hughes of Pawleys Island, passed away June 8th, at the age of 56. Mike was born September 6, 1959, in Moultrie, Georgia, son of Jerrell and Gene Hughes. He was a 1977 graduate of Auburn High School in Auburn, AL. Mike graduated from Auburn University in 1981 with a degree in Chemical Engineering. Following graduation, he moved to Mobile, Alabama, and began a 36 year long career with International Paper, beginning at the Erling Riis Research Laboratory. In 1988 he transferred to the Moss Point Mill of IP, and discovered his true calling for papermaking. Following the close of the Moss Point facility, he moved to Pawleys Island, and worked at the Georgetown Paper Mill, until his passing. Mike loved his job as a papermaker, and has been described as “one of the IP greats in life, leadership, character, accomplishment, and friendship”. Mike also was an avid fisherman, and spent many happy hours in boats, and counted the Gulf of Mexico as his favorite “fishing hole”. As a graduate of Auburn University, Mike loved all things Auburn. He not only avidly followed all Auburn athletics, he was also extremely proud of any and all accomplishments of his alma mater. As part of the Auburn Creed reads “I believe in Auburn and love it”, and he truly did. Mike is survived by his wife, Sharon (Huntley), and his daughters, Laura and Kelly; his brother Doug, and his wife Leigh, and their children, Hadleigh and Sawyer, all of McDonough, Georgia; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. A Celebration of Mike’s life will be held at 4:00 PM Saturday, June 11, 2016 at the Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel, in Murrells Inlet. Overseer Jimmie Smith of The House of Prayer, COGICJ, North Santee, presiding. The family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00 PM prior to the service. Services will also be held 2:00 PM Monday, June 13, 2016 at the Chapel of the Jeffcoat-Trant Funeral Home, in Opelika, Alabama, followed by burial in the Town Creek Cemetery in Auburn, Alabama. The Reverend Vann Bush of New Hope United Methodist Church of Theodore, Alabama, presiding. The family will receive friends from 12:00-2:00 PM prior to the service.
