A limb has fallen from the family tree that says grieve not for me. Remember the best times, the laughter, the song, the good life. I lived while I was STRONG Peter Greg Smithuysen, born in Buffalo, New York, and raised in Dumont, New Jersey, passed away on Sunday, May 3, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of loyalty, service, and deep devotion to those he loved. A proud veteran of the U.S. Army, Peter carried the discipline and leadership he learned in service into a successful career as Vice President of Sales for Atlantic Elevator. Following his retirement, Peter and his beloved wife, Sharon, made their home in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where he fully embraced the life he loved—golfing, long walks on the beach, listening to music, sharing stories, and, most importantly, spending time with his family. Peter had a gift for storytelling and a way of bringing memories to life that made everyone feel connected and at ease. He loved the beach, where he found peace and joy, and he cherished the simple moments—whether it was a conversation, a laugh, or time spent with those closest to him. He also had a deep love for his dogs and considered them an important part of his family, especially his faithful companion, Ranger, who rarely left his side. He was predeceased by his father, Peter Henry Smithuysen; his beloved mother, Violet Lily; and his brother, W. Barry. Peter is survived by his devoted wife, Sharon Salzberg Smithuysen, and a loving family who meant everything to him: his daughter, Meredith Smithuysen Altenburg and her husband Timothy, along with their daughters, Violet and Lily; his son, Elliot Goldbetter and his wife Lisa, along with their son, David; and his daughter, Jennifer Goldbetter and her husband Marc, along with their son, Daniel. He will also be deeply missed by extended family and many dear friends. A celebration of Peter's life will be held on Friday, May 8th, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Goldfinch Funeral Home. Family and friends are invited to gather, share memories, and honor his life.
