Conway… Randall Jay Wood, affectionately known as Randy, passed away on Sunday, October 20, 2024, at the age of 75. He leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness, cherished by his devoted wife of 53 years, Amelia, who faithfully cared for him during his long illness. He is also survived by his mother, Florence of Wilmington, NC; brother Sandy (Missy) and sister Jill, both of Wilmington; sons Keith (Kimberly) of Apex, NC, and Jay of Conway; grandsons Riley Wood and Conner Langston; and granddaughter Lauren McPeak (Breven). He was predeceased by his father, John Ernest (JE) Wood. Born on November 8, 1948, in Sanford, NC, Randy spent his early years in Lumberton and Wilmington, where he met Amelia during his senior year of high school. After serving in the Navy, stationed in Cuba and Charleston, he reconnected with Amelia, and they married on June 27, 1971. The couple lived briefly in Maryland before returning to Wilmington, ultimately settling in Conway in 1976, where Randy began a long and distinguished career with Santee Cooper. Randy's life was characterized by his generous spirit and a profound willingness to help others. A natural tinkerer, he demonstrated his adventurous nature from a young age-disassembling the family lawn mower and, remarkably, putting it back together. As an adult, he became the go-to handyman for family, friends, and colleagues, mastering everything from electronics to home repairs. He proudly completed all the wiring, plumbing, and trim work in the family home they cherished for 40 years. Randy once impressed his future father-in-law and brother-in-law by effortlessly fixing a stubborn boat motor, showcasing his remarkable skills. He was also known for his thoughtful care of elderly neighbors, regularly checking in on them and addressing any issues they faced. A dedicated professional, Randy's passion for power generation ran deep, a legacy inherited from his father and grandfathers. He was an invaluable asset at Grainger Generating Station and Myrtle Beach Gas Turbines, earning a reputation for his expertise. During the historic Hurricane Hugo in 1989, Randy and colleagues courageously drove into the storm to restart the Myrtle Beach gas turbines, ensuring power was restored to the grid and helping his community recover. Later that year, despite the challenges of a major winter storm, he ensured his children had a magical Christmas, using a 4-wheel drive truck purchased on Christmas Eve to get them to Wilmington where their presents awaited. Randy was a devoted father, never missing his sons' events-whether plays, band concerts, baseball games, or high school football games. His love for the outdoors defined much of his life; he enjoyed hunting with his bird dogs and fishing with friends. For many years, Randy and Amelia owned a home in the North Carolina mountains, where they relished biking trails and fly-fishing streams. Back home in Conway, Randy always cultivated an ever-expanding flourishing garden. The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to all the caregivers who provided support during this challenging time, especially McLeod Hospice. A celebration of Randy's life will be held on Saturday, November 2, at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Conway, officiated by Rev. Kyle Randle. Visitation will be at 10 am in the church commons area. Following the service, a reception with lunch will be hosted in the Fellowship Hall for family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Randy's memory to First United Methodist Church in Conway where he was a long-time member also enjoying his membership in the Hut Bible Class.
