Tributes

Raymond Lewis Pleiness, 86, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on Monday, November 5, 2007. Ray was born to Edward and Lucy Morton Pleiness in Detroit, Michigan on February 28, 1921. He attended Detroit public schools. He received a BS degree in Chemical Engineering from Michigan State University, where he was a member of the Theta Chi fraternity. He also earned an MBA from the University of Connecticut. Upon graduation, he went to work for the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company in Akron, OH. There he worked on the development of synthetic rubber to replace natural rubber, the supply of which was disrupted by the war. His career was spent in the rubber and plastics industries. He retired from Voltek in Lawrence, MA in 1996, where he was Marketing Manager for Tape & Medical Products. After Ray and Mary Fran retired to Murrells Inlet, he served on the board of directors of the homeowners? association of the Grand Villas in Wachesaw East Plantation. Upon his retirement from the board earlier this year, he was named Director Emeritus. While living in Connecticut, he served as a deacon and trustee of the Southport Congregational Church. Earlier he was a member of the Kiwanis Club in Waynesville, NC, where he served as president. Ray was an avid student of the Civil War. His extensive collection of history books was donated to the Hampstead, NH Public Library, which is available to readers throughout the state. He was predeceased by an infant sister, Mary. Ray is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Frances Fulton Pleiness; his four children, Linda Lindsay of Murrells Inlet, Nancy Olah of Surfside Beach, Barbara Miller of East Hampton, CT, and David Pleiness of Manchester, MO; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; his brother and wife, Harold and Rita Pleiness of Clinton Township, MI, and their three children. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 10, 2007 at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Thomas Thornton. A visitation of family and friends will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. on Friday, November 9, 2007 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Galion, OH near Mary Fran?s parents. The family would like to extend a very special thank you to all of the caregivers at Waccamaw Community Hospital and Grand Strand Health Care.
