On Saturday, May 1st, 2021, our beloved son and brother, Richard Wayne Cathey III, tragically passed away at 26 years old. Richard was born on April 9th, 1995, in Charlotte, NC to Richard Cathey Jr and Claresa Bigham Fosnow. Richard had a passion for skating, something he loved doing with his brothers and even taught his sister a trick or two. He loved spending time with his family and friends surfing and playing corn hole on the beach. You just needed to remember he was very competitive and wanted to be the best at what he was doing because he was certainly going to challenge your abilities. His brothers Justin, Christopher, Joshua and sister, Melissa, want everyone to know that their brother was an amazing and funny guy who could make anyone laugh. Richard was always the life of the party. He was a kindhearted soul that loved spending time with his family. He could always pick you up when you were down. He never met a stranger and could light up any room with his infectious smile. Richard would literally give you the shirt off of his back if you needed it. More than anything, they want him to be remembered for the proud brother and family man he was, a man who loved his mother like no other and a man who was super proud to become Uncle Ricky to his niece, Gracelyn Faith, just a little over a year ago. Richard was preceded in death by his father, Richard Wayne Cathey Jr, and uncle, Jerry Braswell. He is survived by his loving mother and stepfather, Claresa and Shawn Fosnow of Wilmington, NC, his proud and loving brothers and sisters: Justin Cathey (Kayla), Christopher Cathey, Joshua Cathey (aka JoJo) of Wilmington, NC, Melissa Cathey Gardner (Chris) of Lancaster, SC, Brandon McClain (Makayla) of Leavenworth, KS and Jessica McClain of Lancaster, SC, his grandparents John Bigham Jr (Laura) and Jean Prince of Wilmington, NC, Richard & Sarah Cathey of Murrells Inlet, SC, his beautiful nieces: Gracelyn Faith Gardner, Kaylee Rodriquez and Brinley McClain, his loving aunts and uncles: Melinda (aka Mimi) & Deryle Hillman of Wilmington, NC, Tammy and David Brink of Waxhaw, NC, Becky Bigham of Charlotte, NC, Sherri & Chuck Cook of Lilesville, NC and Angela & Ron Huston of Murrells Inlet, SC. He also leaves behind his beloved cousins Jaxx Hillman of Wilmington, NC, Joseph (Liz) Greene of Waxhaw, NC, Kelsey Kerttula (Josh) of Ringwood, OK, Douglas Ashe of Lilesville, NC, Brian and Daniel Ashe of Murrells Inlet, SC, and Jamari & Wilson Cosby of Charlotte, NC. Richard is also survived by his godmother, Aundria Hill, and her family from Oakboro, NC, his best friend, Zack Tyler (Rachel) of Myrtle Beach, SC, who he considered one of his brothers and many other aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. A Celebration of Richard’s life will be held on Saturday, May 15th, 2021 at Goldfinch Funeral Homes Beach Chapel 11528 Frontage Rd Murrells Inlet, SC. Visitation & Viewing will be from 2:00pm-3:00pm. Preacher Terry Bowen will preside over the service at 3:00pm.
