Mr. Richard H. Williams, Jr., 74, passed away Saturday, November 1, 2014 at Conway Medical Center following an extended illness. He was the son of the late Richard H. Williams, Sr. and the late Edith Woodbury Williams. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Frances J. "Bo" Williams of Conway; children, Shannon C. Williams of Lexington, SC, and Richard H. "Sonny" Williams, III of Garden City Beach, SC; brother, Eddie (Lynn) Williams of Conway; uncle, Billy (Geneva) Woodbury of Georgetown, SC; and several cousins. Mr. Williams was born in Conway on March 12, 1940, educated in Conway schools, and received a degree in Civil Engineering from the Citadel in Charleston, SC. He was a Registered Professional Engineer in SC. After working several years in engineering in Atlanta, he moved back home to Conway where he was employed with the former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base from 1968 until 1999. While at the base he served in various positions including Chief Construction Management, Design Engineer, Chief Programming and Environmental Planning, and Deputy Base Civil Engineer. Mr. Williams also won several awards, including Civil Engineering Senior Manager of the Year in the Tactical Air Command, and first runner up for the National Air Force Award. Following his retirement Mr. Williams worked several years on a temporary basis for the Myrtle Beach AFB Redevelopment Authority overseeing the construction of the infrastructure of what would become Market Common. Mr. Williams enjoyed reading, photography and especially fishing. He was a member of First Baptist Church Conway where he held several leadership roles including Royal Ambassador Director, Sunday School Teacher, chairman of several building committees, deacon, and chairman of deacons. He was also an active member of the Conway Kiwanis. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00PM Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at First Baptist Church Conway, officiated by Dr. Robert Guffey and Rev. Rocky Taylor. Inurnment will follow in Lakeside Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church sanctuary.
