Roy Garland Boger, Jr. passed peacefully in his sleep on March 17, 2023, just shy of his 99th birthday. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Renee Annik Boger, and sons Jack Henry Boger and Dean Michael Boger. Roy is survived by his son, Bruce Alan Boger, of Myrtle Beach, SC. He had 9 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and 10 great great grandchildren. Roy was born on April 24, 1924, in Dallas, TX, the son of Roy G. and Ruth B. Boger. He grew up in Weatherford, TX and attended Abilene High School. Roy played trumpet in the school band and orchestra, and he also played trumpet professionally in big band style groups. After high school graduation, Roy attended SMU in Dallas, TX until he chose to serve his country by enlisting in the Army/Air Force in 1944. Lieutenant Boger piloted a B-17 in Europe during WWII. After the war, he remained in France to investigate military aircraft accidents. During this time, he met the love of his life and future wife, Renee. Roy received his military discharge in 1946 and resumed his studies at SMU. In 1947, Renee came to the United States, where she and Roy were married. While pursuing his degree in business, Roy played his trumpet for big band dinner theater events, rodeos, as well as the Ice Capades. After graduation, Roy and his family moved to Amarillo, TX. On most weekends, he continued to play the trumpet at entertainment venues. The family moved to Falls Church, VA in 1960 when Roy accepted a position with the Atomic Energy Commission at the Pentagon. As his sons began playing sports, Roy gave up his trumpet playing to become their biggest supporter and a constant fixture in the stands during games. Roy and Renee moved to Gaithersburg, MD, after all three sons commenced their adult lives. Once Roy retired from the government, the loving couple enjoyed multiple extended trips to France. They relocated to Myrtle Beach, SC in 2012. Roy will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, and family man. He had a remarkable ability to remember details of those he met, as he always put others before himself. Roy never spoke ill of anyone. He had a calm, gentle and warm spirit, and those that had the pleasure to meet him were grateful for the opportunity. A frequent thought from individuals who knew him was “He is the most gracious and kind man I’ve ever known.” Roy never complained, even as his sight, hearing, and strength deserted him. He remained positive and hopeful and full of grace. The family would like to extend their sincerest appreciation for the team at Gentiva Hospice for their wonderful care and support. An open service celebrating the life of Roy Garland Boger, Jr. will take place at Goldfinch Funeral Services Beach Chapel in Murrell’s Inlet, SC at 10 AM on Saturday, April 15, 2023. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Macular Degeneration Association in Roy’s memory. Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel is serving the Boger family.
