Mary Susan Jones Peters, age 90, passed away peacefully Tuesday, June 18, 2024, at her Murrells Inlet home. Born and raised in Denver, Colorado, she was the daughter of the late Robert Warren Peters and Emily Louise Peters. Along with her parents, Mary Sue is reunited in passing with her sisters, Emily Eldred, Nancy Fink and brother, Jerry Peters. Following graduation from Colorado Women’s College, Mary Sue married and moved to Bishopville, S.C. where she grew to love true southern cooking such as fatback! While in Bishopville, Mary Sue was a member of the Lee County chapter of the D.A.R. where she attended the National D.A.R. Conference as a representative while her grandmother was the National Vice President. Mary Sue loved working with children as she served as both a Girl Scout leader and an assistant Kindergarten teacher. She later served as the Area Executive Director of the American Cancer Society for the Pee Dee, Branch Manager of North and South Carolina Chapters for the Arthritis Foundation of Charlotte, N.C. and later retired as Volunteer Coordinator for Mecklenburg County, N.C. After retirement, Mary Sue moved in 2005 to Murrells Inlet, where she served on the Board of Directors at Murrells Inlet 2007 for several years. Mary Sue also enjoyed traveling and yard work, and especially playing bridge in her later years with her close friends. She was a member of the Belin United Methodist Church. She was loved and known for her sense of humor, and those that knew her have many stories of her pranks! Mary Sue was a proud grandmother (Susie) and great grandmother (G.G.), who enjoyed having her great grandchildren over for cookies and milk. Survivors include 3 daughters: Margy Jones Smith (Ed) of Lewisville, N.C., Linda Jones Connell (Gene) of Murrells Inlet, S.C., & Kathy Jones Van Dyke of Hartsville, S.C. She leaves grandchildren: Kristen Van Dyke Nelson (Tom), Jessica Smith Baker (Daniel), Scott Van Dyke, Emily Smith Jennings (Dustin), and Katie Van Dyke Aiken (Hovey), along with great grandchildren: Corbin Baker, Wyatt Jennings, Lincoln Baker, Wilson Nelson, Camden Jennings, and James Nelson as well as the love of her life, Dr. George Andrinopoulos. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2 pm, Saturday, July 13, 2024 at the home of Gene and Linda Connell, 670 North Creekside Drive Murrells Inlet. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be made to Belin UMC or charity of your choice.
