Tributes

Attorney Thomas Harrell Barr of Pawleys Island and Georgetown died peacefully at home with his family on Monday, February 25, 2008. He was sixty one years old. Mr. Barr was born in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the youngest son of the late Captain Capers G. Barr, Jr USN and Lucy Siau Barr of Georgetown. He attended public schools in Key West, Florida; Alexandria, Virginia; Norfolk, Virginia; and Georgetown and Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. He graduated from The Citadel with the class of 1968 and, following several years of employment with Utilities Construction Company in Charleston, entered Law School at the University of South Carolina, graduating and being admitted to the Bar in 1976. He practiced with the firm Moore, Flowers and Doar in Georgetown for two years; then as a sole practitioner from his family home on Prince Street in Georgetown; and then at Pawleys Island, until his retirement in 2006. He was a past president of the Georgetown County Bar Association. Mr. Barr is survived by his wife Carol B. Barr; daughters Katherine Holcomb Barr of New York City; Lucy Virginia Barr and David Coe of Summerville; and son Michael Reid McLaurin and his wife Summer of Myrtle Beach; and by his beloved granddaughter Caton Robison Coe. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters in law Capers G. Barr, III and Ellen N. Barr of Charleston; and William S. Barr and Suzanne N. Barr of Mt. Pleasant; his brother in law Steven J. Burnham and his wife Cathy of Chapel Hill; a sister in law Nancy S. Burnham of Charlotte; by ten nephews and nieces; and eight grand nephews and nieces. Tom Barr is remembered by friends and family as a witty raconteur, known for practical jokes, a general passion for life, and as a loving husband and father. He was a longtime participant in the Pawleys Island Male Female Flounder Fishing Cooking and Eating Tournament. PIMFFFCET. Raised in the creeks of Pawleys Island, Tom learned early the value of letting others catch and clean fish for him. He holds the record for catching the fewest fish in tournament history. A memorial service will be conducted by Rev. Tommy Tipton at 4:00 P.M. on Saturday, March 1, 2008 at Holy Cross Faith Memorial Episcopal Church, Pawleys Island. Friends and family are invited after the service to celebrate Tom's life at his home, 78 Comfort Lane, Litchfield Mainland.
