Vergil A Lester, 92 of Myrtle Beach, formerly of (Shinnston WV) passed away on October 27, 2016 at Myrtle Beach Manor. He was born March 22, 1924 in Warsaw NY to the late Amos and Mildred (G riffith) Lester. He is survived by his wife of 70 years Ann, daughters Virginia (Edward) Harrison of Myrtle Beach, Suzanne (William) Bushnell of Harpswell, Maine, Cheryl (Del) Ray of Myrtle Beach, Mari (Brian) Clovis of Orange Park, FL ; sons James (Rose) Lester of Fairmont WV and Timothy (Kimberly) Lester of Conway SC. Five Grandchildren, Brandon (Jennifer) Lester, Columbus OH, Amanda (Tim) Vance, Canonsburg PA, Travis Lester of Conway SC, Katelyn Lester, Morgantown, WV and Zachary Clovis, Orlando FL; one step-grandchild, Brandi (Stevie) Roberts of Aynor, SC; Four great-grandchildren, Amelia and Simon Lester , Grace and James Vance and two step-great-grandchildren, Riley and Raylin Roberts. Also surviving is sister Lucille Burnette, of Menifee CA, half brothers Terry (Carol) Lester, of Houston, TX, and David (Martha) Lester of Enterprise, WV; brother in law, Russ Slocum of Simi Valley CA along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by daughter Patricia Lester, infant son David Lester, grandson Craig Harrison, sister, Jean Slocum, and step mother Maggie Lester. Vergil was a World War II veteran, having served in the US Army’s 1284th Combat Engineers. He participated in both the European and Pacific Theaters. He worked for 40 years in the surface mining industry in north central WV and retired from WV Coals Inc of Clarksburg WV as a mine manager. He was a loyal supporter of West Virginia University athletics and the WVU Marching Band. He and Ann along with several of his children attended numerous regular season and bowl football games. He was also an avid Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates fan. After he and Ann moved to Myrtle Beach in 1986, he became active in the InterCoastal Seniors Golf League, several golf and bowling leagues and was past president of the Myrtle Beach Golf and Yacht Club Homeowners Association. He was also a starter/ranger at Heron Point Golf Course for several years. He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Garden City, SC. A Mass will be celebrated at St. Michael Catholic Church on Monday, October 31, 2016 at 1:00 PM with a one hour visitation prior to service. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery in Conway SC.
