Vincent P. Flanagan, Sr.,86, passed away peacefully in sleep on December 28, 2024, at Anderson Oaks Assisted Living community, Conway, SC. Vincent was born April 5, 1938, in Brooklyn, NY. He was the son of James and Catherine Flanagan. He was the loving husband of Barbara "Bobbie" Jean Flanagan for 25 years. He was predeceased by his daughter Bridget Brady (John) and sister Lorraine Harp (Jack). He is survived by his sons, Mark Flanagan (Heather); Paul Flangan (Jill); sister Judith D'Amato (Frank), seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. After attending high, school Vincent served in the U.S. Army as a member of the 11th Airborne Division. Following his military service, he joined the research arm of the Coca-Cola Company when it was located in New Jersey. While at Coke Vincent began his professional career as a chemist and was mentored by one of the chemists and would eventually be entrusted with the formula for Coke. Vincent left Coke and moved to Maryland where he worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture performing fundamental research as an organic chemist for over 30 years. He is published in over 60 peer-reviewed scientific journal articles. In addition to his passion for chemistry, he had a wonderful grasp for mechanical devices and could be found on the weekends performing maintenance on his lab equipment. For example, he would change out bearings or other parts of the turbo molecular vacuum pumps used by his TSQ70B quadrupole mass spectrometer. Vincent retired from federal service in 2003 and shortly afterward moved to Conway, SC with his new wife Bobbie. Vincent was an exceptional father, mentor, and husband. He was an avid Maryland basketball and Notre Dame football fan. He often completed lists of home maintenance needs when visiting family and friends. One may easily call him a master craftsman of wood. Known to create architectural detailed structures in his garden, creating multiple fireplace mantles, retaining walls, and improving anything he touched. For many years, he worked with Costal Carolina University to take water samples from around Conway, SC. Vincent greatly enjoyed his retirement in Myrtle Trace with his wife Bobbie before they moved to Anderson Oaks. He will be missed by all who knew him. He often said, his love of his family, and his research in chemistry are some of his proudest accomplishments.
