Virginia Lee Bowdoin Hoerner Pawleys Island Virginia Lee Bowdoin Hoerner age 88, wife of the late Hal Stucy Hoerner, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 2, 2009. Mrs. Hoerner was born in Atlanta, GA, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Hammond Bowdoin, Sr. She was a member of the West End Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA and a 1940 graduate of The Girls High School in Atlanta. She then joined the WAAC of the 8th Army Air Force in 1943. She was stationed in England for two and a half years during WW2, where she met her husband Hal. She lived in Savannah, GA for 44 years, also spending three years living in New York City with her husband Hal and son Mark. Virginia moved to Pawleys Island, SC, after her husband's death in 1994, where she lived with her son Mark, daughter-in-law, Patricia and granddaughter, Amanda. Mrs. Hoerner studied art at High Museum of Arts and Sciences in Atlanta, GA, Telfair Academy of Science and Art in Savannah, GA, and the National Academy of Arts and Sciences in New York City, under the direction of Robert Phillip. She was the Vice President of the Savannah Art Association. Over her 50 year career, she won numerous awards for her art and was a long standing and respected member of the Savannah art community. She joined Women in Military Service for America Memorial, at Arlington National Cemetery and was a member of Veterans of Foreign War post #10420 in Murrells Inlet, SC. She is preceded in death by her husband, Hal Stucy Hoerner; son, Mark Ingalls Hoerner and brother, Laurance Hammond Bowdoin, Jr. Survivors include her granddaughter, Amanda Morgan Hoerner of Pawleys Island; daughter-in-law, Patricia Hoerner Chase and her husband Kenneth Chase of Pawleys Island; nephews, Craig Bowdoin, Paul Bowdoin and Larry Bowdoin; John Hoerner, Hal Hurst Hoerner, and Richard Hoerner. Virginia will be remembered for her love of art, nature, animals and devotion to her son Mark and her family. Her uplifting attitude and positive outlook on life, showed her love and faith in God. Her grace, dignity and sense of humor will be long remembered and passed down to all those whom she loved. Her spiritual gift of art and detail allowed her to see and share the beauty of God's creation. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, September 7, 2009 at Pawleys Island Community Church Chapel, with Reverend Don Williams officiating. Family will receive friends Sunday, September 6, 2009 from 5:00-7:00PM at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Litchfield/Pawleys Chapel.
