In Loving Memory of Colonel Walter “Skip” Brewer Heggie, Jr., US Army (Retired) We deeply mourn the passing of Colonel Walter “Skip” B. Heggie Jr., a distinguished military officer, devoted husband, talented photographer, and passionate golfer. His life was characterized by steadfast dedication, heartfelt moments, and meaningful relationships. Born on June 12, 1941, in Fort McPherson, Georgia, he was the cherished son of Chief Warrant Officer Walter B. Heggie and Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Jones Heggie. Growing up in various locales including Georgia, Japan, and Virginia due to military relocations, Skip graduated from Wakefield High School, Arlington, Virginia, in 1959. He then attended the University of Georgia, where he notably graduated as a Distinguished Military Graduate from the US Army Reserve Officer Training Corps. Throughout his illustrious military career, Colonel Heggie was the recipient of numerous accolades, including three Legions of Merit, the Bronze Star, three Meritorious Service Medals, two Army Commendation Medals, the Army Parachutists Badge, and the Expert Infantryman Badge. His dedicated service led him to diverse assignments ranging from Taiwan and Fort Carson, Colorado, to the Pentagon and Kaiserslautern, Germany. Following his military retirement in August 1990, Colonel Heggie contributed his expertise to the corporate sector, joining Caliber Systems, Inc., and later, the Lockheed Martin Corporation. In 2006, he embraced a serene retirement in Pawleys Island, South Carolina, where he pursued golf, offered guidance to the Homeowners Association, traveled extensively, and cherished moments with his dear wife, Karen. His 59-year union with Karen Ann Heggie stood as a testament to genuine love, trust, and mutual respect. Their home echoed with laughter, shared memories, and the kind of warmth that only true love can bring. Beyond his professional pursuits, Skip's photographic endeavors captured the nuanced beauty of the world, providing a unique glimpse into his view of life. His treasured collection of fountain pens further reflected his appreciation for tradition, the written word, and artistry. Colonel Heggie is survived by his wife, Mrs. Karen Ann Heggie, his sister, Ms. Carol Ann Stallings of Tyrone, Georgia, a niece, a nephew, and his seven godchildren. His legacy will resonate with family, friends, and all fortunate enough to have known him. In honoring Skip's memory, we reflect on a life rich in service, love, and simplicity. Let his values guide us in our daily lives, cherishing every moment and seeking beauty in all we encounter. A Celebration of Life service is scheduled for Sunday, 22 October, at 2 pm at Goldfinch Beach Chapel, Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. Funeral and burial details at Ft. Myer Chapel and Arlington National Cemetery are to be confirmed. In lieu of flowers, Colonel Heggie's wish was for donations or remembrances to be directed to Tunnel to Towers, Georgetown County Low Country Food Bank, the USO, or Samaritan’s Purse.
