Murrells Inlet.....Wayne Murphy Phillips, age 72, died Sunday, December 14, 2008 at the Medical University of South Carolina. Wayne was born August 15, 1936 in Lynchburg, VA. He was a son of Robert Randolph Phillips and the late Adelaide Murphy Phillips. Wayne served five years in the United States Marine Corps, along with thirty years of service with the US postal service. He worked as a letter carrier, supported workers as a union president in Arlington, Virginia, while raising four boys as a single dad for 15 years. Wayne's dedication to his country and family was unmatched. He never missed his children's baseball games or school events, and touched everyone's heart with his kindness and warm smile. His love for outdoors and "farm life" was equaled only to his love for the Washington Redskins football team. Wayne lived every day on his terms, and with a love for life that was admired by all that knew him. Heaven has been blessed with a kind soul and a good man. He was predeceased by a sister, Carole Bizzack. Surviving in addition to his father of Lynchburg, Virginia are his wife, Saundra James Phillips of Murrells Inlet; four sons, Jeffrey Phillips and wife Michele of Plymouth Meeting, PA, Gregory Phillips and wife Deborah of Glen Allen, VA, Steven Phillips and Patty of Gainsville, VA and Mark Phillips and wife Jennifer of Conway; one step-son, Chad Jordan and wife Brianna of Conway; one step-daughter, Tracey Bartlette and husband Steve of Myrtle Beach; nine grandchildren, Jesse, Lindsey, Eric, Tyler, Matthew, Cole, Carson, Ashley and Cody; three step-grandchildren, Kris, Paden and Camden; three sisters, Neil Johnson and Dr. James Johnson of Lexington, KY, Martha Lea Filson of Lynchburg, VA and Zane Castle and husband Don of Reston, VA; one brother-in-law, Dr. John Bizzack of Lexington, KY. Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Thursday from Juniper Bay Baptist Church with the Rev. Rodney Hord officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery directed by Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.
