My father, William Elliott age 96, passed away on Saturday, October 12, 2024. He was an amazing man and I could not be more proud of him. He was born in Washington DC in Sibley hospital, went to grade school there, and he spent most of his free time going to the comic book store and the cinema watching the movies information reels using his mother’s street car pass. His grandfather also lived in DC and he would sit upstairs and listen to records on the old Victrola. He knew his way around DC very well and knew a lot of the history of the 20’s – 40’s in our Nation’s Capitol. He also loved big band music. He went to a lot of the live concerts of all the big names as a young man and knew who played for all the band leaders on all the instruments. After grade school he attended a correspondence course and received a degree from Corcoran School of Art and then became a mapmaker for the Department of the Interior. He was the smartest man I have ever known and his work on the maps was meticulous. He used to tell me about the Little Tavern shop that used to be in DC not far away from the office where dad or his office mates would buy an inexpensive bag of sliders for dinner when they were working on a project. He met my mother a while before his office was moved to Reston VA and I came along just after they moved to Vienna VA. I was privileged to spend 50 years with my dad and he was a kind and generous person. We grew closer after mom died of cancer and we did everything together. He was always helpful and supportive especially on the long read trips to Charleston for medical reasons or just going to Costco or out to breakfast or just offering advice.. Never in a million years did I anticipate loosing my dad so soon or think we would both be in the hospital together with Covid and pneumonia or that I would loose my cat and my father in the span of three months. I miss my father dearly and these three months have been the hardest ordeal of my life. Rest in peace, Dad, I love you so much and you were taken from me too soon. A Graveside service will be held at 2:30PM on October 17, 2024 at Ocean Woods Cemetery. Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel is handling arrangements. Whenever I am missing you, I also remember how fortunate I was that you were in my life. I would'nt trade those moments for the world." -Cindy Adkins
