Wilma Irene Williams Horton, of Garden City, SC, passed from this life to be with her Lord on Sunday, April 16, 2017. She was the beloved wife of Ronald Johnson Horton and the loving mother of two daughters, Mary H. Stewart, wife of Lt. Col. (Ret.) Curtis E. Stewart, of Mary Esther, FL, and Faith H. Haywood, wife of Donald E. Haywood, of Boone, NC. She was the grandmother of Dorie A. Stewart, Lisa S. West, C. Scott Stewart, Angel S. Baran, and Jessica Irene Haywood. She had four great-grandchildren, Christopher Stewart, Courtney Frederick, Grace West and Kaleb Stewart; two great-great grandchildren, Aydren C. Stewart and Tristan M. Frederick and a nephew, William Bryant, of Wilson, NC. Wilma was born January 6, 1927, in Greenville, NC, the daughter of William E. “Rusty” and Dorothy E. Hurrey Williams who were vaudevillians. Wilma was born into show business and the family traveled extensively. She and her sister, Billie, performed in song and dance acts. She attended schools wherever they traveled and was featured in “Ripley’s Believe It or Not” and the “Guinness Book of World Records: for having attended 265 schools in 10 years. Still a world record, she attended Miss Hardbarger’s School of Business and Atlantic Christian College. She was teaching high school at age 18. Wilma was an accountant and office manager in legal offices in North Carolina. She was also a speaker for Stonecroft Ministries for 35 years and spoke to groups in many states. She started and let the Christian Retreat for Women for five years at Belin Methodist Church. She wrote many plays, skits, stories and poems, some of which were published. She also wrote beautiful sacred songs. Wilma loved this country and its history. She was a member of many hereditary societies; among them were the DAR, the UDC, The Order of the Crown of Charlemagne, The Jamestowne Society, the House of Burgesses, Magna Charta and The Merovingian Society. She was elected Chaplain General in 2009 of the National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century. There will be a visitation from 2:00-3:00 PM Thursday, April 20, 2017 at Garden City Baptist Church, 501 Pine Street, Garden City, SC. The funeral service will follow at 3:00 PM. An Eastern Star graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM Friday, April 21, 2017 at Evergreen Memorial Gardens, Wilson, NC.
