Eugene J. “Gene” Hardig, devoted husband of Mardeline J. “Babe” Hardig, age 90 of Surfside Beach, passed away peacefully Friday, September 3, 2021 following a short illness. Born in South Bend, Indiana he was the eldest son of the late Eugene J. and Rosemary (Higgins) Hardig. Education included Seton Hall and Notre Dame Universities. He was employed as an Industrial/Manufacturing Engineer for Studebaker Corporation, South Bend, IN; Plant Superintendent for Ford Motor Company, Heavy Truck Assembly, Louisville, KY; Plant Manager for Young, Spring & Wire Corporation, Chicago, IL; Vice President of Manufacturing for Gulf & Western Metals Forming Company in Southfield, Michigan and their Metal and Wood Casket Assembly Plants in Richmond, IN and Sherborn MA and Vice President, Manufacturing for Thonet Industries, Statesville, NC. After 36 years in manufacturing, as well as moving his family several times, he retired at the end of 1987. He and his wife moved to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and looked forward to walking the beach, playing golf and enjoying the warm weather. Predeceasing Gene, in addition to his parents is his son, Stephen E. Hardig and his sister, Rosemary Shafer. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 70 years Mardeline "Babe", his daughter, Sandi H. Horne of Chadds Ford, PA; 2 sons, Robert E. Hardig and wife, Nancy of Lisle, IL and Patrick M. Hardig and wife Lisa of Statesville, NC; 4 grandchildren, Heather (Samuel) Gornick, Michael R. Hardig, Elizabeth A. (Daniel) DeGraff and Stephanie M. (James) Mixson; 2 great-grandchildren, Avery A. Gornick and Emmalynn M. Gornick; 2 brothers, James E. Hardig and Edward W. (Joan) Hardig all of South Bend, Indiana and many nieces and nephews. The family would also like to express their thanks and appreciation to Regency Hospice, First Light Home Care, Bonita Haugen and Jane Koke for their special and loving care during this time. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am on Friday, September 17, 2021 at St. Michael Catholic Church, Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. Burial will follow on site. Memorial donations may be made to St. Michael Catholic Church 542 Cypress Ave Murrells Inlet, SC 29576 Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
