    Helen Luester Goff Davis

    March 7, 1926 - October 25, 2019

    Loris… Mrs. Helen Luester Goff-Davis, age 93, passed away Friday, October 25, 2019. She was born April 7, 1926 in Horry County, (Bayboro) South Carolina and was the seventh of ten children born to the late Essie Mae (Johnson) and Lorenzo Chavis Goff. She grew up on the farm and attended public school where she completed the 7th grade. She was united in holy matrimony on December 12, 1948 with Mr. Harvey Davis. Mrs. Luester was preceded in death by her husband, one son who passed at an early age, her daughter Brenda Mae, her mother and father Essie Mae and Lorenzo, three brothers and nine sisters, and a son-in-law David Rascoe. She leaves to cherish her loving memory her children, Priscilla Ann Rascoe (Bayboro, SC) and Geraline Davis (Augusta, GA); two sisters Betty Moody (Bayboro, SC) and Beatrice Bowman (Portsmouth, VA), six grandchildren Andrea (Clarence), Jason (Courtney), Phillip (Tonya), Lamont, Katrina and Derrell; eleven great-grandchildren Alicia, Amiah, Jason Jr., Joshua, Demargues, Demonte, Lamonni, Lamont Jr., Kyra, Samaria and Derrell, Jr. and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. She began her Christian walk at the Pisgah AME Church and later the New Bethel AME Church. In 1954, she relocated to Washington, D.C. and joined the Turner AME Church where she was a member of the Gospel Chorus, Class Leader and later became a faithful usher and instructor, traveling across the country to usher conventions. She began her journey in food services. She started at a small deli in upward DC and from there she was employed with Drug Fair Pharmacy/Cafeteria (Rite Aide) as a fountain manager, supervising many employees. She was energetic, committed and excelled in her job and met people from all parts of the world. After many years of work, Mrs. Luester retired in 1983. Her journey included when she graduated from Freeman's (Howard University) Hospital in the Nursing Program, DC, a dedicated International Usher and Training Officer, President and member of the Gospel Chorus, Class and International Usher and Training Officer at Turner Memorial AME. She received numerous awards and honors for her participation in church and the community. In August 1998, Mrs. Luester moved back to South Carolina and became a volunteer at the various senior citizen centers (Green Sea, Aynor and Loris) and lastly, she worked with Horry County Council on Aging as a Nutrition Aide and finally retired again. She then began attending the Loris Day Care Center which she attended faithfully and eventually became a resident of the Ronald E. McNair Nursing Home in October, 2017 and the Pruitt Health Nursing Home in N. Augusta, SC in September, 2019. She was a 71-year Chartered member of Mary Star Chapter 242 Eastern Star Lodge, Loris, SC and first secretary. Hospitality was her gift from God. She was a great helper wherever she went. Special thanks to Miss Amiah Johnson, Mrs. Connie Bellamy, Ms. Easter Mae Wilde, Ms. Angela Lewis, Ms. Tricia Moody, and the Staff Members at Ronald E. McNair Nursing Home, Lake City, SC, Mr. Andy Davis and Pruitt Health Nursing Home, N. Augusta, SC, Nurse Sallye Jameson, Pruitt Health Hospice of Aiken, SC. Visitation will be Thursday, October 31, 2019 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Loris Chapel. Funeral services will be held Friday, November 1, 2019 at 12:00 p.m. at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Johnny Gilbert Randall officiating. Burial will follow in the New Bethel AME Church Cemetery.
