James Allen Rogers, Sr., age 79, of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, August 25, 2021. Jim was born in Youngstown, Ohio, on April 12, 1942, the son of the late Blodwyn and John Rogers, MD. A graduate of the University of Virginia (Class of ’64), he began his career at IBM in sales, and later moved into software development and executive roles at several electronic business systems companies in Washington, DC; Lancaster, Pennsylvania; and Richmond, Virginia. He then ran a successful independent consultancy for the paper industry. He completed his business career as the owner of an optical laboratory, which operated in the Richmond metro area for nine years. During his retirement he was an avid golfer and pickleball player at Wachesaw Plantation in Murrells Inlet, where he also served as the president of the Property Owners’ Association for four years. Throughout his adult life, Jim loved singing barbershop music and was a twenty-year member of the Virginians, Richmond’s barbershop chorus, serving as its president for multiple terms. In South Carolina he enjoyed singing with the Palmetto Vocal Project of Charleston and the Low Country Barbershop Chorus. He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his brother, Jack. Surviving are his wife of 35 years, Ann; his two daughters, Jenny Rogers of Reston, VA, and Amy Smith (Gary) of Dayton, OH; his son, James Rogers, Jr., of Laurel, MD; and his granddaughter Macy LiXiu Smith. Light refreshments and beverages will be served as we come together to remember the wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend that he was.
