August 30, 1942 - November 30, 2019
James Larry Young, age 77, went to be with the Lord Saturday, November 30, 2019. Born in the Yauhannah community of Georgetown, SC, Larry was a son of the late Henry Lewis “Doc” and Hazel Young. He graduated from Winyah High School. Following his years at Clemson, where he was a member of Sigma Kappa Epsilon fraternity and the Pershing Rifles, Larry proudly served in Vietnam as a US Army Captain. He was awarded a bronze star and two bronze service stars and was the S-3 Operations Officer in charge of Tactical Operations for his Artillery Battalion, in 23rd Infantry Division, Chu Lai. He was in I Corps, the northernmost Corps in South Vietnam. Later he took command of a fire battery split in three different locations miles apart. Larry not only sacrificed for our country, but his primary concern was what he could do for others. Larry was a successful General Contractor, specializing in both commercial and residential construction. He was a man of deep faith and a charter member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. He will be remembered for his incredible love, and kind, generous spirit. He was an outdoorsman who had a deep love for the Lowcountry and for cheering on his Clemson Tigers. He was a great storyteller and cared deeply for others, wanting to know their stories as well. He leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion, and nothing brought him more joy than to be with his family, especially his grandchildren. We rejoice in the hope that we will one day be together again. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers Deryl Don Young, and Lloyd Michael Young, and his sisters Jacquolene Young Gould, and Donna Young Thompson. Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Suzanne McCoy Young; children James Larry Young, Jr. and his wife Mary of St. Simons Is., GA, Tosha Ellette Young and her husband Mark of Greenville, SC, Merrell Young Kennedy and her husband Klay of Florence, SC, Adrienne Young Erwin and her husband Robert of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren James Young, Jackson Young, Margaret “Meg” Young, Evans Young, Caroline Young, Claire Young, Samantha Kennedy, Emily Grace Kennedy, Hudson Kennedy, Monroe Erwin, Weston Erwin, Bennett Erwin; brothers Hank Young and his wife Ramona of Georgetown, SC, Joe Young and his wife Linda of Georgetown, SC, and Lamar Young and his wife Sally of Atlanta, GA.
