Joseph T Lazzara

Pawleys Island………… Joseph T. Lazzara, 87, of Pawleys Island, SC, formerly of Park Ridge, IL died peacefully at Arbor Landing at Pawleys on June 16, 2024, following a long-fought battle with Alzheimer's, Diabetes, Kidney Disease and Parkinson's. Joe loved his family more than anything else and is survived by his loving wife, Marlene, of 66 years, their children Lynne Halper (Mark) of Murrells Inlet, SC, Joseph G. Lazzara (Gail) of Georgetown, SC, Joyce Lazzara (Tom) of Pawleys Island, SC, and Lori Lazzara also of Pawleys Island, SC. Joe was the proud grandfather of five grandchildren - Andrew Halper (Dana), Keely Halper, Jenna Toothaker (Brandon), Nicolette Lazzara, and Gabriella Lazzara, and three great-grandchildren - Ava Lynn Halper, Adam Halper, and Asher Halper. Joe leaves behind his sister Mary DeVito of Port St. Lucie, FL, his brother-in-law Frank Grzesik of Coral Springs, FL and his sister-in-law Carol Addante (Louis) of Wheaton, IL. He was also very close to many nieces and nephews. Joe was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Josephine Lazzara, his sister, Angela Grzesik, his brother-in-law, George DeVito and Mary DeVito's special friend Bill Johnson. Joe was born in Chicago, IL and obtained an AAS Degree in Accounting at Wright Junior College and a BA Degree in Management and Developing Organizations at DePaul University in Chicago. He served the Chicago Transit Authority for 33 years in a variety of positions including Senior Project Controller, where he was responsible for development and management of all projects related to busses, rail cars, construction, contracting, procurement contracting and environmental assessment. Joe continued his transit career at the Proviso Council on Aging in Bellwood, IL where he was the Transportation Coordinator and managed the transit operation for elderly handicapped, including training of employees and construction projects oversight. In February of 1998, Joe and Marlene relocated to Pawleys Island where he continued to share his transit expertise on the Board of Directors for Coast RTA while dabbling in retirement, enjoying the beaches and exercising his favorite sport, golfing. Joe loved traveling and was also an avid Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears fan and enjoyed cheering his teams on with family and friends whenever he could. Joe was a devout Roman Catholic, served as an usher at Precious Blood of Christ Catholic Church and was a faithful member of the Knights of Columbus. Joe will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Visitation with family and friends will be from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM on Friday, July 19, 2024, at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Litchfield-Pawleys Chapel, 202 Hinnant Lane, Pawleys Island, SC. The Prayer Service will begin at 6:30 PM. Mass of the Catholic Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Saturday, July 20, 2024, at Precious Blood of Christ Catholic Church in Pawleys Island, SC. The service will be live streamed and can be viewed by visiting the church’s website at www.pbocchurch.com. Inurnment will follow in the church Columbarium.
