Joyce Harriett Motter
June 14, 1934 - September 30, 2020
Joyce Jones Motter, 86, passed away September 30, 2020 in Murrells Inlet, SC. Mrs. Motter, born in Greenville County, was the daughter of the late Grover L. and Juanita H. Jones of Greer, SC, and widow of the late Charles E. Motter, USAF retired. In June 1952, Joyce Jones met her beloved, ‘Chuck’, a young airman from Punxsutawney, PA, stationed at nearby Donaldson AFB. Following a whirlwind courtship and a Halloween proposal, the young couple wed on December 20th. She and the love of her life were inseparable for nearly 67 years. Their military adventures and years together brought them two daughters, a son and many wonderful friends spread across several states and England. Joyce was always delighted to be surrounded by her growing family. Christmas and 4th of July became the most special family gatherings. She was an adoring grandmother and loved her grand-kids and great-grand-kids more than anything. “Her children arise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.” Proverbs 31:28 She was an active member of Timberlake Baptist Church of Myrtle Beach, where she served the Lord faithfully. Joyce enjoyed music, played piano, auto harp and sang in the choir. She especially loved working with the children’s music program. In later years, she developed a sincere passion for Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child. Joyce and her husband served together helping coordinate with others in the packing of shoeboxes sent to bless children overseas. She was eager to volunteer wherever needed, be it ministering at nursing homes, assisting with Vacation Bible School, or helping with church dinners and special events. Known for excellent cooking skills, she was best loved for her genuine hospitality. Joyce was happiest when her home was filled with guests and tables were laden with home cooked meals. She enjoyed hosting annual neighborhood teas, and soup/dessert luncheons for her community’s maintenance crews. ‘But be ye doers of the word and not hearers only’ certainly applied to Joyce and her servants’ heart. Mrs. Motter and her husband were also charter members of First Southern Baptist Church Mountain Home, the first of its kind in Idaho. She will be missed by so many family and friends. Joyce loved sunshine, the outdoors and had quite the green thumb. She loved starting new plants and sharing them with others. She was fond of her ‘redbirds’ and will be forever remembered each time family or friends glimpse a beautiful cardinal at their bird feeders. Survivors include daughters Patricia West (Larry) of Murrells Inlet, SC, Susan Davis (Gary) of Surfside Beach, SC, and son, Steven Motter (Jamey) of Raleigh, NC. Six grandchildren, Brian and Jared Reed, Andrew Davis and Ashley Silber, Elizabeth, and James Motter. Eight great-grandchildren, Braeden, Carsen, Evalette, Leonidas, Tyrion, Abigail, Jaxon, and Elijah. Four sisters, Mary Ann Jordan, (Mooresville, NC), Helen Morrow and Catherine Hamrick (Greer, SC), Linda Phillips (Orangeburg, SC), one brother, William R. Jones, (Greer, SC) and many nieces and nephews. A family memorial service will be held at Timberlake Baptist Church. Funeral Home Beach Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
