Meta Hyatt
August 30, 1928 - January 1, 2016
Meta Grainger Hyatt Loris...Born August 30, 1928 in Loris, Meta was the daughter of the late Flossie and Ernest Grainger. She passed away January 1, 2016. She is predeceased by her husband of almost 50 years, Frank Burroughs Hyatt, with whom she farmed and raised two daughters. Always a hard worker, she was also very active as a leader at Gurley Baptist Church, teaching Sunday School, the women's class and Vacation Bible School and singing whenever possible. A woman ahead of her time, she modeled determination, self-confidence and strength of character. She shared her opinions freely and unabashedly with anyone and encouraged others to do the same. As a widow, Meta moved off the farm and developed a taste for traveling and other adventures around the country with new friends. She demonstrated a quick wit and a degree of stamina that wore out most everyone around her regardless of their age. She loved working in the yard, taking care of her flowers and pear trees, and watching birds. In later life, she fell in love again and married the Rev. A.D. Grainger of Conway, who also predeceased her. In more recent years, she took great joy in being able to rejoin Mt. Zion Baptist Church, the church in which she was raised as a child. On most days, you could find her out enjoying lunch at Webster's or Cracker Barrel and then shopping. Meta is survived by her daughters, Wanda Hardee of Loris and the Rev. Kimberly Hyatt (Jane Freedman) of Jacksonville, Florida, her grandson, Jonathan Hardee (Heidi) and two great grandchildren, Avery Hardee and Emma Grace Hardee of Loris, and two sisters, Jo Holland of Florence and Gail Rhodes (Larry) of Loris, as well as the children of A.D. Grainger, Donald Grainger (Linda) of Conway and Nancy Salyer (Ed) of Buffalo, Minnesota. She is predeceased by her sister, Mildred Bell, and brothers Harvey, Shelton & J.C. Grainger. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Monday January 4, 2016 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with Rev. David Watts officiating. Entombment will follow in the Twin City Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM Monday in the church sanctuary.
