Pawleys Island Alan "Al" Kareiva Alan "Al" Kareiva, 65, passed away on March 8th, 2012 at his home in Pawleys Island, SC. Born in Chicago, he was the son of the late Leo and Bernice Lukas Kareiva. He was also predeceased by his sister Janet Mrozek. Al is survived by his wife of 36 years, Linda; stepson Ronald Clauson and his wife Emily of Chilton, WI; stepdaughter Robyn Hite and her husband Don of Asheville, NC; son Christopher Kareiva of Pawleys Island and daughter Anna Mallard and her husband Mitchell of Wilmington, NC as well as five grandchildren and two step grandchildren. Having earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from Southern Illinois University in 1969 and his CPA certificate in 1971, Al worked for Ernst & Ernst Accounting, and later served as comptroller of Gateway Industries also in Chicago and as controller/treasurer of Carpetland USA in Munster, IN. He was treasurer for Medema's Carpets in Grand Rapids, MI for 8 years. In 1985, he purchased Pawleys Island Interiors, later renamed Carpet One Pawleys Island. Though he sold the business in 2004, Al remained a vital contributor until his death. In addition to his passion for business, Al enjoyed sports, especially baseball, bowling, golf and fishing. In 1962 he won the Illinois American Junior Bowling Congress title and placed twelfth in the nation. Al's many friends will remember the joy he took in travel, board and card games, and his fondness for humor. Al was a faithful Christian, a member of All Saints Church in Pawleys Island since 2004. Previously he served as treasurer of Christ Lutheran Church in Orland Park, IL and on the building committees of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Pawleys Island and Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church in Garden City, SC. Other associations include the Horry Georgetown Home Builders Association, which he once served as president. He was also a member of Alpha Kappa Psi and Alpha Beta Psi Fraternity's. The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00 pm on Saturday, March 10, 2012 at Goldfinch Funeral Home, in Pawleys Island. A ceremony celebrating Al's life will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, March 11th at All Saints Church, 3560 Kings River Road in Pawleys Island. The family requests donations in lieu of flowers.
